In preparation for the release ofThe Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Nintendo has released an official story recap video forThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Sequels in theZeldafranchise are uncommon, and even then stories rarely continue in substantial ways. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdommay be bucking that trend, and Nintendo wants to verify players are adequately prepared for what’s to come.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wildlaunched on Nintendo Switch in 2017, more than six years ago. It may not feel like it’s been so long, but the development ofThe Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdomhas taken much longer than many expected. Withso much time passing betweenZeldagame releases, it wouldn’t be surprising if many fans had forgotten the original game’s story. It may not be as rich of a story as other games, but it’s important to know going into the sequel nonetheless.

A new video titled “Relive the Story ofThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” was shared by Nintendo on its YouTube channel on Friday. The video runs for over six minutes and is intended to provide a recap ofThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s story. Nintendo also notes that the video is intended for both new and returning players, so that anyone can jump intoThe Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdomwithout feeling like they’re missing something.
While the video starts with Link waking up in his shrine, just like inThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, it quickly jumps back 100 years into the past. That’s when the bulk ofThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s story takes place, after all. The game itself is built on the consequences of those events 100 years past. Key concepts likeLink’s Master Sword, the four Champions, Calamity Ganon, Princess Zelda, and the fate of Hyrule are all touched on before returning toBreath of the Wild’s present.
From there, the second half of the video tells the story of the player’s actions inThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The King of Hyrule, Zelda’s efforts, andLink’s renewed efforts to defeat Ganonare all mentioned here, but surprisingly little detail is shared about the world ofBreath of the Wilditself. At its heart,Breath of the Wildis still a very simple game.
Perhaps the lack of detail is intentional and thatThe Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdomwill reintroduce various characters and concepts in its own way. Or perhaps Nintendo would rather players not worry about what took place in a game released six years ago. What’s seemingly important is Link, Zelda, and Ganon, and the rest will fill in from there.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdomreleases May 12 on Nintendo Switch.
