Within theFinal Fantasy 7timeline,Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunionserves as the chronological entry point for many well-known characters. Throughout protagonist Zack Fair’s adventure, players are introduced to younger versions of main characters fromFF7, including Cloud, Sephiroth, Aerith, and Tifa.Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunionalso features a cameo from nine-year-old Yuffie Kisaragi, who plays a minor role but already shows glimpses of her courageous, fiery nature.

Final Fantasy 7is known for crafting some of the JRPG genre’s most well-structured characters.Cloud Strife is regularly praised as a complex and relatable protagonist, and supporting characters such as Red 13 and Tifa Lockhart are also looked upon favorably. Yuffie is no exception to this, but she was more of an enigma in the original game due to being a completely optional character. The recentFF7 Remake: INTERmission DLCchanged this by thrusting Yuffie into the spotlight as its main protagonist. This, coupled with her cameo inCrisis Core, gives fans a much deeper understanding of her character and motivations.

Yuffie Has a Minor Role in Crisis Core

Zack first meets Yuffie during the late stages of theShinra- Wutai war. During his invasion of Fort Tamblin, Zack is approached by Yuffie, who proclaims she is Wutai’s greatest warrior despite being nine years old. Zack plays along with her act until she eventually runs off. Soon after, Wutai succumbs to Shinra’s army, and Yuffie’s father Godo makes the decision to turn the city into a tourist attraction. This profoundly impacts Yuffie, and she vows to restore Wutai to its former glory.

Zack Fairencounters the young ninja again before long. Yuffie manages to steal some valuable plans from her father, each containing the location of rare treasures. Her plan is to send these locations to Zack via cryptic emails, coaxing him into finding the treasure before stealing it from him at the last minute. Unfortunately, each time she tries this, the treasure either isn’t worth stealing or Zack is able to see through the ruse, so the plan fails every time. During the last of these attempts, Yuffie is successful in stealing valuable Bahamut Fury materia from Zack, but finds she is unable to use it, so sends it back to him a couple of days later.

Despite only playing a minor role inCrisis Core, over the years Yuffie has established herself as a popular and important party member inFinal Fantasy 7’s universe. Her role as the main protagonist in theFF7 Remake DLCshowed she’s an interesting character in her own right, and is quite comfortable standing on her own two feet without Cloud and the others. Her side quests inFinal Fantasy 7, despite being completely optional, are among some of the most innovative and unique content the game has to offer.

WithFF7 Remakemoving to change the original game’s narrative, the question remains regardinghow Yuffie will be integrated into Cloud’s party inFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirth. It may be that her introduction is similar, with the party randomly encountering her in a forest before she joins the group. However, developer Square Enix could choose to change this entirely. Either way, her involvement seems a foregone conclusion now that her character has already debuted in this new continuity with the INTERmission DLC,andCrisis Corerepresents an opportunity for players to see the spunky character make her debut.
