With the Seasonal changes for theWoW Classic Season of Discoverycome a few updates to professions. The Waylaid Supply system has helped to encourage players to interact with the professions systems of the base game, and some SoD professions, like Blacksmithing, have even gained new recipes to craft.
But the best SoD professions are those that can provide utility to others, can make lots of Gold, help make items thatunlock Runes for all classes, or provide other benefits for both the player and their party. Remember to pick up secondary professions to complement these recommendations for the most useful professions in SoD.
Best Overall: Herbalism and Alchemy
The pairing of Herbalism and Alchemy make for the most generally useful combination of all professions inWoW SoD.It’s good at making Gold, thanks to endgame Herbalism materials going for a lot on the Auction House, its Potions are useful for both the creator and other players (unlike Engineering), and it’s almost essential to clear one boss in Blackfathom Deeps.
Ifyou are struggling to choosea profession for SoD, Herbalism and Alchemy are a great place to start. It’s not the best at any one thing, but it ticks a lot of boxes.
Best Personal Use: Mining and Engineering
Mining and Engineering have long been the pick for hardcore min-maxers inWoW Classic. It’s the only profession with access to Grenades, which are ridiculously useful for PvP and, now, forRogue Tanks to pull Threat. It’s the only profession that can make headgear in Phase One, and in later phases it will have access to some of the game’s most useful tools.
The downside of Mining and Engineering is that, for the most part, only players with Engineering can use the items that the profession makes. If you make Green-Tinted Goggles, then swap from Engineering to another profession, you won’t be able to equip the Green-Tinted Goggles anymore. It is worth noting that Engineering is the only profession that can make Autosalvage Units for the Ratchet Grizzby questline, which can be a good way to make some money if other players have the mats and tip well.
Best Guild/Raid Utility: Tailoring and Enchanting
Though Alchemy is practically required to get past Twilight Lord Kelris, and thus contributes much to groups' ability to clear BFD, Enchanting is close behind in terms of usefulness. Though Enchants must be done before combat, having enchanted gear can bring a player up to the next level.
Enchanting can be expensive, so only enchant gear that you will be using for a long time. When a BIS or pre-BIS item drops, consider enchanting it as it will likely remain in its equipment slot for a long time.
It’s important to take Tailoring with Enchanting because it’s the only production profession that doesn’t require players to harvest special material nodes out in the world. Tailors can create disenchantable items with Cloth, which drop from enemies throughout Azeroth. It’s the most efficient way to acquire disenchantable items that doesn’t require farming dungeons.
Best Professions For Gold: Mining and Herbalism
If producing items, or providing a service for other players, doesn’t sound like a good way to spend your time inWoW, consider picking up two harvesting professions instead. With two harvesting professions trained, you will collect materials while exploring normally, which can then be resold for pure profit or given to another player to craft with.
Mining and Herbalism are the best choices because they can be useful for several professions, and thus will bein high demand at max level. Skinning is a viable gathering profession for early levels, when Leather can really boost one’s Silver, but by the endgame Alchemy, Blacksmithing, and Engineering materials become much more sought-after.
