World of Warcraft’snew questline about the Blue Dragonflight features an emotional sendoff to some of the game’s oldest and most beloved characters. Though technically a side quest, many players consider this newWorld of Warcraftstory to be one of its best yet.

Recently,World of Warcraftadded another branch of story to expand on Patch 10.1. The main event of this mini-update was the last chapter of theEmbers of Neltharioncampaign, which finally gaveWorld of Warcraft’sBlack Dragonflight a new Aspect.

However,Dragonflightadded an incredible story featuring the Blue Dragonflightin the same week as well. Players work with Kalecgos, the Aspect of the Blues, in helping to rebuild the future of his flight. Working with beloved characters like Senegos, Stellagosa, and the simulacrum of Sindragosa, players travel to the corners of Azeroth to find missing Blue Dragons including Kirygosa, Azuregos, and Haleh. Finally, they return to the Dragon Isles and help put the tormented spirits of Malygos and Sindragosa to rest, giving them the chance to pass on in a moving cutscene.
Were that not emotional enough, players then have to say one more farewell in thisWorld of Warcraftquest. Senegos, the ancient Blue Dragon that players first met inLegion, realizes that his time has come to an end. In a touching, tear-jerking moment, he says goodbye to his granddaughter Stellagosa, entrusting her with the future of their family before happily embracing his death.
Players later receive a letter from Stellagosa thanking the player and giving them a new toy that takes the shape of a miniature version of Senegos himself. If they return to theAzure Span zone inDragonflight, they can later find Emmigosa–another young descendent of Senegos–in a Troll visage form inspired by his own.
Many players were floored by how amazing thisWorld of Warcraftsidequest was. It touched on lessons of trauma, loss, and loneliness while still conveying a hopeful message about family and love. Many also loved getting to see Malygos and the real Sindragosa for the first time sinceWrath of the Lich King, even if only for a brief moment. The emotional highs and lows, combined with the attention to detail by including both popular and obscure characters in the questline, proved the care that went into crafting it–some have even said it might be thebest story in all ofWorld of Warcraft’shistory. Hopefully,Dragonflightcan maintain this level of quality storytelling in the future.
