The Last of Us Part 2is a game that pulls no punches, both in a metaphorical sense and in a literal sense. Naughty Dogdirector Neil Druckmannpromised that the game would be challenging to players and wanted to brace them for the experience to come, which instantly told fans that there would be a lot of deaths on the way.
For those that might be curious, there are a lot of surprising moments inThe Last of Us Part 2,and not everyone has a happy ending. But in order to fully discuss who dies inThe Last of Us Part 2, players should be prepared for SPOILERS.
Does Joel Die in The Last of Us Part 2?
Arguably the biggest death inThe Last of Us Part 2, if not the whole franchise, isJoel’s death. After Joel and Tommy help rescue Abby from a snowstorm and a massive horde of infected, Abby and her Washington Liberation Front friends turn on them and eventually kill Joel. Abby uses a golf club to brutally beat Joel to death, while Ellie helplessly looks on.
Does Jesse Die in The Last of Us Part 2?
Jesse is Dina’s ex-boyfriend, father of her unborn baby, and a part-time companion to Ellie during her adventure. When Abby confronts the group at thetheatre on Day 3, Ellie and Jesse burst through a door in an attempt to rush Abby. However, she quickly reacts and shoots Jesse and he dies. His son lives on the farm with Dina and Ellie, though.
Does Tommy Die in The Last of Us Part 2?
Tommy is brutally shot during the same skirmish with Abby and is seemingly killed. It’s only once the game jumps forward in time following the theatre fight that players learn that Tommy is alive, albeit with some facial disfigurements including a missing eye. Following theevents in Seattle, Tommy becomes obsessed with tracking down Abby, which puts a strain on his relationship with Maria and the couple split up. Now fully consumed by his obsession, Tommy finally tracks down Abby and seeks to tell Ellie the news.
Does Dina Die in The Last of Us Part 2?
Dina is one of the lucky ones inThe Last of Us Part 2, but only in that she doesn’t die. Midway through the game, Dina reveals that she is pregnant, which forces Ellie to leave her behind at the theatre “home base.” After Ellie concludes her third day in Seattle, Abby shows up at the theatre looking for revenge and viciously beats Dina before threatening to cut her throat. Lev eventually intervenes and Abby leaves her alive.
The game then jumps forward to show that Dina, Ellie, and the baby are living a happy life on a farm. But when Tommy says he has found Abby in California, Ellie eventually decides to pursue her. Dina is left heartbroken and she eventually moves out of the farmhouse and her whereabouts are unknown at the end of the game.
Does Ellie Die in The Last of Us Part 2?
Ellie has a ton of close calls inThe Last of Us Part 2, but she ultimately survives. She is brutally beaten by Abby during the fight in the theatre, but Abby ends up sparing Ellie and Dina. And when Ellie catches up with Abby in Santa Barbara, Ellie makes it out alive once again. She loses two fingers after Abby bites them off, but that’s the only longterm damage that Ellie sustains.
Does Abby Die in The Last of Us Part 2?
While the main goal ofThe Last of Us Part 2is arevenge story against Abby, the character does not die. She kills Jesse, maims Tommy, and beats both Ellie and Dina but is convinced to spare them by Lev. In Santa Barbara, Abby and Lev are captured by a group called The Rattlers and tortured in the sun. When Ellie cuts her down the two fight in the shore, and Abby is almost drowned by Ellie. At the last minute, Ellie decides not to kill Abby and lets her escape with Lev in a motorboat.
Do Owen or Mel Die in The Last of Us Part 2?
Owen is Abby’s ex-boyfriend inThe Last of Us Part 2. He has grown disillusioned by the WLF and wants to sail to Santa Barbara to look for a new group of Fireflies. He hopes to take Abby with him as he clearly still cares for her, but while Abby is away, Ellie kills him.
Mel is Owen’s pregnant girlfriend. She is at the Seattle Aquarium with Owen when Ellie finds them. Ellie kills her without realizing that she is pregnant.
Do Yara or Lev Die in The Last of Us Part 2?
Yara and Lev are two siblings thatrescue Abby from being killedat the hands of the Seraphites. They are both Seraphites themselves, but they have abandoned the cult-like group because Lev shaved off their hair. The Seraphites (or Scars) want Lev to be groomed as a wife for one of the men, but they refuse. As punishment for her sibling’s actions, Yara has her arm broken by a hammer but a distraction by Lev helps her get free and she and Abby kill the two Scars. The three escape but Yara has to have her arm amputated by Mel at the Aquarium after she develops Compartment Syndrome.
Lev escapes to the Seraphite island to try to help their mom escape, and Abby and Yara give chase once they realize Lev is gone. They find that Lev has accidentally killed the mom when she refuses to accept Lev for who they really are. As they try to escape the Seraphite island, which is now under attack from the WLF, Yara is killed. Lev and Abby do end up escaping and Lev helps act as a sort of conscience for Abby throughout the rest of the game. Without him, Abby would have likely killed Dina and Ellie at the theatre.
Lev is also captured by the Rattlers in Santa Barbara and tortured. Once Ellie decides to let Abby live, she escapes with Lev.
Of the main and primary sidecharacters inThe Last of Us Part 2, those are all of the ones that die. There are, of course, many other deaths along the way, including Manny, Nora, and practically everyone present at Joel’s murder. By now it should be clear what Neil Druckmann meant when he said that some fans won’t like the game.
