The latest entry in the long-runningHaloseries is a big game, but the file size still manages to keep itself below the competition. One player, however, encountered a confusing issue with the Xbox download screen that claimed an update forHalo Infiniteis several thousand times the size of the game itself.
Halo Infinitelaunched late last year to positive reception, with high praise directed at its free-to-play multiplayer component, which was playable ahead of the main campaign. The campaign is also generally regarded as the best developer 343 Industries has put out yet, as it does new things while maintaining the feel of older campaigns.

Player YOLO_Y33T shared an image of a strange problem with an update toHalo Infinite; despite the time estimate displaying a reasonable 21 minutes and 40 seconds, the update size estimation displays a 16,777,215.96 terabyte download. For perspective, that is over 17 billion gigabytes, over 350 million timesHalo Infinite’s initial install sizeof 48.42 GB total. A game that big would not fit on even business-level equipment, much less an Xbox Series console.
Fortunately the issue appears purely cosmetic; YOLO_Y33T shared in a later comment that the download was somehow successful. Most likely the number displayed was different from the system’s actual estimation of the download size. Realgame file sizes are getting absurdly massive, but hopefully sizes that go above a terabyte are still many years off.
WhileHalo Infinite’s actual size of about 48 GB is relatively modest compared to other recent games, it still takes up a significant chunk of the Xbox Series X’s limited internal storage. This would be less of a problem if theofficial Xbox expansion cards weren’t incredibly expensive, as some reaching prices almost as high as the console itself. Regardless of storage estimation bugs, it would be a fair assessment to say that game file sizes are out of control.
Despite the high storage and system requirements,Halo Infiniteis still a massive success and has managed to retain a core playerbase through its multiplayer. LongtimeHalofans and players new to the series alike are jumping in thanks to its free-to-play multiplayer, and the move to cross-platform, while it is a confusing one, has undoubtedly attracted newHalofans. WithHalo: The Master Chief Collectionalready giving players most of the story to jump into, the question of when or ifHalo 5will come to PCis worth asking. Even with its mixed reception leaving behind a mainline release is a strange move.
Halo Infiniteis available on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
