Morbius’very own Tyrese Gibson has recently put out some major proclamations regarding the upcoming film. While being interviewed, he was blatantly asked ifSony’sMorbiusis a part of the MCU. Gibson replied with a confident yes. He was then asked to confirm further, to clarify thatMorbiusis a part of theAvengersworld - to which he replied flat out, yes, again.
Gibson seemed very certain of his claims aboutMorbius’world fitting somewhere into the expansiveMarvel CinematicUniverse, which he made during an interview with ComicBook.com. However, the distributor of the film,Sony, publicly denied thatMorbiuswas at alla playing factor in the MCU. However, there is no question as to whether or not the film takes inspiration from theMCU.The officialfilm synopsis reads, “Biochemist Michael Morbius tries to cure himself of a rare blood disease, but when his experiment goes wrong, he inadvertently infects himself with a form of vampirism instead.”

The character ofMorbiuswas taken from the originalMarvelcomics, which may have been many fans' first introduction to him. The storyline and essence of the character ofMorbiusstemmed from Sony announcing that they were going to be producing a franchise ofSpider-Man-inspiredfilms. The veryfirst trailer that dropped forMorbiusfeatured graffiti declaring thatSpider-Manwas a murderer. This could be a potential nod towards the ending ofSpider-Man: Far From Homewhen Peter Parker is framed for a murder, which suggests Marvel Studios' MCU and the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters are connected somehow, despite the latter company’s denial.
TheSpider-Manfranchisehas been rumored to be indefinitely dipping its lens into the vast multiverse. This makesSony’s definitive “no” as to whetherMorbiusis at all a part of the MCU a bit confusing - especially since strong connections betweenSony’shero-themed project is somewhat inevitable. To further confuse and entangle the situation, Gibson also mentioned that the film was set to debut in October, whichSonyalso denied. Perhaps this is caused by miscommunication or a lack of information about just how bothSonyandMarveloverlap, and to what extent.
Yet, the absence of coordination and coexistence is a bit strange considering it seems both parties are correct in some way. The premiere date originally attached to the film did, in fact, get pushed back. On the other hand, it was not by a matter of months, as Gibson had stated.
Whatever Marel Studios and Sony have planned for their respective movie worlds remains to be seen, but fans may have more answers onceSpider-Man: No Way Homehits theaters. The President of Sony Pictures Entertainment recently suggested there was a plan to connect theSpider-Manfranchises of Marvel and Sonythat would be clear after audiences seeNo Way Home.
Morbiuswill now be released on January 28th, 2022.
