Sony’sUnchartedsettles in the coveted top spot at the domestic box office, earning $51 million over the holiday weekend, with an estimated $44.1 million generated over its first three days in theaters. The video game adaptation is the first film for Tom Holland after the wave of incredible success accumulated from Marvel Studios and Sony’sSpider-Man: No Way Home, which ended the weekend seated in third.
Uncharteddebuted internationally last week before appearing in domestic theaters, potentially to avoid any distractions the Super Bowl may have presented. The film generated $21.5 million overseas, which created early speculation that the project could see a $40 million total domestically by the end of the holiday weekend. The popular PlayStation franchise adaptation has received mixed reviews across the board. The film obtained a 39% rating from Rotten Tomatoes based on critics' opinions, which differs significantly from the audience score on the platform, which sits at 90%. However, the pessimism surrounding the project from certain critics didn’t discourage audiences from interacting with the treasure hunting adventure, eager to see Holland take center stage in a roledifferent from the one inSpider-Man: No Way Home. As a result,Unchartedhas generated roughly $139 million worldwide, accumulating $88 million internationally, alongside its domestic earnings.
Coming in second place this holiday weekend isChanning Tatum’sDog, which ended its opening run with an $18 million total. The film was a personal project for Tatum and marked the actor/directors return to the big screen after a four-year hiatus. The film opened this past Friday, earning $5 million, which increased slightly throughout Saturday, as the film ended the night with a $5.6 million total. However, Sunday’s $4.4 million total saw things regress from the previous two days, which looks to continue throughout Monday, with the film projected to take home $2.9 million. Despite its minuscule performance, the film received a better reception thanUncharted, earning a 77% from Rotten Tomatoes and an A- from CinemaScore.
Rounding out the top three is a familiar box office resident,Spider-Man: No Way Home.
