Tinykin, the recent 3D platformer from Tinybuild Games and developer Splashteam, has received a new update that adds a Challenge mode. While that’s not one of thebiggest fixesTinykinneeds, the update could add new life to a recent release that people already like quite a lot as it is.
TheTinykinreview on Game Rantnotes that forPikminfans, the gameplay will be immediately familiar, and praises the game for “crafting a fun, pleasing, and hugely explorable world.” The narrative and quest motivation were cited as weaknesses, but overall the game has made a name for itself as a worthwhile experience even in the crowded holiday release window.

In a new trailer released today, Tinybuild Games presented some of its favorite accolades and ratings from a number of leading outlets and took the opportunity to reveal a new Challenge mode that comes as part of a free content update. The mode adds a variety of new outfits that are available to players who clear special new Time Attack Challenges offered by hornets Mach and Sprint, who reside in the “rooms” that make up the game’s sprawling world. According to Tinybuild Games, there are 12 challenges to beat and 10 costumes that will appear in Chrysal Workshop once they have been unlocked. The new content, with its emphasis on hustle, sounds like one more item to add to thelist of things that separateTinykinfromPikmin.
Free updates are part of a developing trend. A number of recent releases, even from larger publishers such as Ubisoft and Sega, use free content to keep players invested in their game worlds. For instance,Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s free DLC could help players to perfectly transition intoMirage, the next major entry in the franchise. Sega also plans to release freeSonic FrontiersDLC well into 2023.
With so many new games releasing each month, even publishers with a significant marketing budget sometimes struggle to keep players invested. Their struggle leads to good results for players who enjoy free stuff, however. Although consumers tend not to appreciate it when developers release a new game and then almost immediately announce expensive additional content they might have easily included in the initial product, a drip feed of additional content over the following months or years usually meets with less resistance. Even some of thebest free competitive multiplayer gameskeep updates coming, despite already being free to start. In a world with rising prices everywhere, “free” might just be the best way to stand apart from the crowd.
Tinykinis available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
