Just a little over a month since the initial release of Netflix’sThe Witcher, and it’s clear that the company has a hit on its hands. So, in lieu of a new season of the live-action show, Netflix is teasing an animated film calledThe Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf–and surprisingly, Geralt of Rivia isn’t its main protagonist.
Netflix announcedtheWitchermovieearlier this month, revealing that the film is being made in collaboration with Studio Mir (which, for those who don’t know, is the studio behindThe Legend of Korra). Not much else has been let slip on Netflix’s part about the film yet, save for a little blurb about its plot, including the fact that the movie will actually center upon the witcher Vesemir.

Anyone who read the books or playedThe Witcher 3will know exactly who Vesemir is, but he hasn’t yet made an appearance in the show–only been mentioned by Geralt. Vesemir is essentially the same thing to Geralt that the witcher himself is to Ciri: a mentor and father figure, as Geralt was promised to him through the Law of Surprise. But from the look of things, this movie won’t be about any of that; Netflix’s short summary confirms that the animated feature takes place before Geralt was even born.“Long before mentoring Geralt, Vesemir begins his own journey as a witcher after the mysterious Deglan claims him through the Law of Surprise,” it reads.
By the sound of it,Nightmare of the Wolfseems like it’ll be an origin story for Vesemir, something that hasn’t been addressed even in the books. So it’s not entirely clear yet whether or not the movie will be consideredWitchercanon (since it’s well-known thatauthor Andrzej Sapkowskidoesn’t consider the video games canon), butThe Witcher’s showrunner Lauren Hissrich did work more with Sapkowski on the show than CD Projekt Red did in its games.
While there’s not much else to know as of yet about the movie, the whole concept definitely makes things look good forThe Witcher’s future on Netflix. Plus, since there’s going to be a Vesemir-centric movie, who knows? Maybe a few othersecondaryWitchercharacterswill get a bit of spotlight in the future, too.
The Witcheris available to stream now on Netflix.
