Though it may not have had the most successful launch back in 2018, theEpic Games Storehas managed to persevere over the last four years, managing to do the impossible and stand toe-to-toe with Steam.Epic Games Storehas come a long way since its inception, and its wealth of free games has done a lot of the heavy lifting when it comes to having players put faith in the brand.
In an attempt to compete with Steam, Epic Games Store has continued to give users a handful of free games every month, and 2022 saw some real heavy hitters hit the store page. With over 100 games given away for free in 2022, it’s understandable that not every free game can be a triple-A, critically-acclaimed masterpiece, however. DespiteSteam making games likeDivine Knockoutfreethis year, Epic Games had a few tricks up its sleeve.

2022 was an exceptional year forEpic Games Store users, with over 100 titles being given away for free. While some months weren’t quite as stacked as others, users got their fair share of free titles over the course of the year, with some of the costing upwards of $50. When every game’s standard retail price is added together, the Epic Games Store gave away games worth an eye-watering total of $2244.03.
The Epic Games Store kicked off 2022 with a pretty big bang, offerings non-stop heavy-hitters including theTomb Raidertrilogy,Galactic Civilizations 3, andDaemon X Machina. Though February didn’t quite hold as much monetary value as January’s free offerings, the quality of each game given away was up there, withCris TalesandBrothers: A Tale of Two Sonsbeing some real highlights. March saw a lot of $9.99 games being given away, butTotal War: Warhammerended the month very strongly. April and May were some of the best months of the entire year for Epic Games users, with huge titles likeBorderlands 3,XCOM 2, andBioShock: The Collectionhitting the store’s free pages.
During the summer, the Epic Games Store took a bit of a backseat, delivering just a handful of free titles each month, all being of relatively low value and low status. These months even saw Epic Games highlighting a few titles that were already set to be free-to-play releases, which some users felt was a bit of a cop-out. In September things picked up a little, with significantly more games releasing for free, though there weren’t too many big-name titles to write home about. October was more of the same, though November offered a few standouts such asStar Wars: Squadrons,Rising Storm 2, and the recently releasedEvil Dead.
But, in true Epic Games fashion, the storefront has ended the year in style, offering a free game every day during the run-up to Christmas, beginning on December 15. This year’s December offerings were fairly impressive, delivering a wide range of gaming experiences from a variety of different genres. Some of the highlights of December wereLEGO Builder’s Journey,Fallout Classic Collection,Mortal Shell,Dishonored: Definitive Edition, andKojima’sDeath Stranding, which allowed some lucky early-redeemers to nab the Director’s Cut of the game. On the whole, the Epic Games Store’s 2022 free offerings have been pretty impressive, and have continued to keep the store relevant in such a competitive market.
