There was a time whenThe Simsdominated the market with all sorts of spin-offs, but that no longer seems to be the case since the launch ofThe Sims 4. Maxis used to bring its colorful style to numerous genres including city builders, party games, and even a secret agent-focused title. The Simswere everywhere and in everything, but something seems to have drastically changed.

The focus ofThe Simsseriesis now solely on churning out content forThe Sims 4. The last majorSimstitle outsideThe Sims 4was 2013’sSimCity, and the last official spin-off ofThe Simssubseries wasThe Sims Medievalin 2011. It is now 2023, and there are noSimstitles coming out in the immediate future. It seems that EA and Maxis have no interest in further exploring this franchise with new spin-offs, and that feels like a big missed opportunity.

The Sims Series Has Become Stagnant With Sims 4

The Sims 4hit store shelves in 2014, and there seems to be no end in sight for its post-launch content. The game proved controversial at first as it stripped out some fan favorite features fromThe Sims 3, but Maxis has steadily expanded on it ever since. The studio hascontinually churned out new DLCthat has expanded the game in new ways and brought back some of these fan favorite features through paywalls, and it seems like this is going to continue for the immediate future.

There is no shortage of content forThe Sims 4fans to enjoy, but fans of the greaterSimsfranchise have been left with nothing to do. Maxis' sole focus has been on expandingThe Sims 4rather than expanding the rest of the series with new spin-offs, and that has made the series feel stuck. There was a time whenSimshad numerous spin-offsexploring all sorts of different genres with its colorful style, but that is no longer the case.

Before the release ofThe Sims 4,The Simsseries was everywhere. Players could venture through a medieval world withThe Sims Medieval, they could go follow various stories inThe Sims Storiessubseries, and Wii owners couldexplore this colorful world through theMySimstitles. The Simsalso served as a spin-off to theSimCityseries, and there was a time when Maxis was churning outSimtitles that simulated all sorts of things. From 1989 to 2014, there was almost oneSimsgame a year, and some years saw even more.

The Sims 4has outlived all those spin-offs, and it has even outlived the series that it spun-off from. However, that should not be the case. There is so much possibility with the oldSimsspin-offs that it would be a shame if Maxis never revisited them. The Sims 4is fun, but the unique spin-offs offered new scenarios for players to enjoy. They can pull in players that may not have an interest in the life simulation genre, and they can help liven up a series that has become stagnant in recent years.

There does not seem to be any plans forSimsspin-offs in the immediate future, and the success ofThe Sims 4gives the studio little reason to focus its attention elsewhere. The Sims 5is also in production, and its release will most likely serve as the first majorSimstitle since 2014. This is great news for fans of the series, but it is still a long ways off. While Maxis may try to fill the void with newSims 4DLC, revisiting the classic spin-offs and bringing the series back to its heyday may be the better route to take.

The Sims 4is available now for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
