It’s been over half a year since Riot Games releasedTeamfight Tactics. The company has been busy withLeague of Legends’Season 10 start, uploading videos to hype andexplore other projects in 2020. On that note, Dax “Lunchbox” Andrus and Stephen “Mortdog” Mortimer,Teamfight Tactics’producer and lead game designer respectively, have released their upcoming plans for the auto-battler game in 2020.

Briefly winding the clocks back, Lunchbox described the process of buildingTeamfight Tacticsfrom scratch as a Riot project in February 2019 along with its launch, quality-of-life changes, and therecent Rise of the Elements update. Emphasizing the importance of player feedback for improving the game, Mortdog then talked about the previous removal of extreme random mechanics such as Demon and Hextech origins and how softer counters are healthier for the game than hard counters completely invalidating a team.

Moving on to what’s ahead, Mortdog previewed that new champions and origins will be added to Set 2 in the coming months. Thechampions showcasedduring the talk were Karma and Leona, which leads to the question of whether these two will fit into an existing origin or bring a new one into the set. Furthermore, Mortdog hinted at the rework of a few key items that can aid players in certain situations. While this could be a jab at changing the dominance of certain items, it seems more likely that underused and niche items are being revised to reflect their intended use or counter specific champions and teams.

However, the biggest announcement was Lunchbox teasing the release of Set 3, which the team has been working for some time now. The splash arts showcasedcostumed alter-egos of championsfrom the PROJECT, Star Guardian, Odyssey, and Pulsefire skin-lines while words like STAR, BLAST, and SPACE were used. Looking at the shared traits, players can accurately predict that Set 3 involves futuristic or sci-fi elements and alternate universes. Set 3 is tentatively set to release sometime in mid-March, which is whenTeamfight Tacticsshould release on mobile as well.

It’s clear thatTeamfight Tacticshas been a resounding success for Riot Games not even a year into its release. With over 33 million monthly players, the game has not only succeeded in attracting investedLeague of Legendsfans but also the growing portion of the auto-battler community. And with a Set rotation every four months, players won’t get tired anytime soon.

In the end, 2020 is looking to be an even more action-packed year forTeamfight Tactics. But for fans who need a break, there are other projects to check out likeLegends of Runeterra, the Riot card game which will be starting its open beta soon.
