The viral success ofWordle, the browser-based puzzle game, is one of 2022’s most surprising developments. The wayWordleis able to capitalize on a social media surrounding each daily puzzle, encouraging others to play without spoiling solutions, is a recipe future games will be trying to recreate for years. In the meantime, any number of creativeWordle-inspired puzzle games have attempted to capitalize on the wave of puzzle-minded fans. The latest example,Survivle, offers a great inverted take onWordle.

AsWordleplayers are now deeply familiar with, the goal of the game is tosolve each day’s puzzlein as few guesses as possible. LosingWordleis a rarity, however, so imply solving the puzzle each day doesn’t necessarily feel challenging or particularly rewarding. Being able to finish a puzzle in two or three guesses, though, is always exciting to share via Twitter timeline.Survivleinverts that idea, challenging players to take as many guesses as possible to solve the puzzle.

UnlikeWordle,Survivlehas a clear, challenging goal with equal footing for every player for every puzzle. For every puzzle, the player tries their best to avoid solving the word. As such, the goal remains to figure out the word, but to use as many guesses that aren’t that word as possible. Players may find that it’s very hard not to solveSurvivle(andWordle, for that matter) in no more than four or five guesses. Players will have tostretch their vocabularies.

To makeSurvivlework, some rules do have to be imposed. For example, any letter discovered to not be included in the word can’t be used again. Also, any letter that is in the word does have to be included again. It’s similar, but stricter, thanWordle’s optional Hard Modesettings. But it’s the only way to keepSurvivleplayers focused on the puzzle.

If there’s one mistake thatSurvivlemade it’s that there is no daily word.Survivleis automatically generated each time players go to the site and can be played as many times as players want in a single sitting session. That means it doesn’t make sense to share results onsocial mediato compare with friends, taking out the social and competitive part of what makesWordleso successful. Maybe that will change ifSurvivlegets more attention.

Survivleis just the latestWordlespin-off worth checking out. It may not be as challenging as Absurdle,Mathdle,Octordle, orStar Wordle. It may not be as silly asLewdle,Byrdle, orLetterle. WhatSurvivleis, however, is a potentially better version ofWordle, if it went through a few more optimizations to capitalize on social media and stat tracking.
