Super Mario Bros.on the NES has gone down in history as one of the most important video games of all time, with the titular plumber brothers still making an impact on the industry nearly four decades later. Containing some of themost iconic platforming levels in gaming, people are still playing the original to this day. Many of these players have been attempting speedruns and setting new world records. Now, another runner has come along and is inching the community closer towards a perfect run.
As spotted by The Gamer, user Niftski has now managed to set a new world record inSuper Mario Bros.with a time of 4:54.798. To put that into some perspective, second place, held by a player called Miniland, is sitting at 4:54.914, making the new number one spot just milliseconds quicker than the previous record. In fact, Niftski was able to achieve this latest time by shaving off just five frames. At the time of them beating the game, they didn’t even realize at first that they’d managed to set a new world record, believing that they’d just fallen short.

It seems that speedrunners are incredibly close to achieving thefastest possible time inSuper Mario Bros. It’s been theorized that the quickest it could take someone to reach this supposed “perfect” playthrough is 4:53.265. This means that, as of now, the likes of Niftski are just 1.5 seconds away from pretty much being unbeatable. If someone does achieve this time, which it seems could be a possibility quite soon, then it remains to be seen what theMario Bros.speedrunning community will do with the game because there will be no way to beat this perfect run, in theory at least.
For those looking to get into running, there are manygames that are suitable for new speedrunners, such asPortalorMirror’s Edge. Of course, it requires a lot of time and dedication, and many may not achieve world records. At least not at first. However, some are happy to do it as a personal challenge, and the likes of Games Done Quick hold events for charitable purposes.
As forSuper Mario Bros.itself, it’s one of those legendaryplatformer games that can make players feel good. For many, it’s a dose of nostalgia and a way to relive the early gaming days from their childhood. For others, it’s just a wholesome and easy game to get into that is still inspiring other titles in this day and age.
