Today’s announcement from Rocksteady Studios that aSuicide Squadgame is currently in development took fans by storm, as players anticipate jumping into the successful comic series. Rocksteady’s version ofSuicide Squadfirst leaked last year, but according to an industry insider, the actual game may take some time before it hits store shelves, although fans might get another look at it fairly soon.
This latest inside look atSuicide Squadcomes from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, who took to twitter to add some context to Rocksteady’s announcement. Specifically, Schreier focused on the somewhat unsteady development process thatWB Games, especially the WB Montreal branch, had while trying to develop the upcoming title.

According to Schreier,Rocksteady’sSuicide Squadhad originally started development at WB Montreal before being canceled late in 2016 for unknown reasons. After the cancellation, either in late 2016 or early 2017, Rocksteady began working on its own version of the title, meaning that it has been in development for roughly three years now. With this context of how development has progressed so far, Schreier suggests that it may be a while before players get their hands on it, but a teaser may be coming soon.
It has been confirmed before that WB Games plans onannouncingSuicide Squadat DC FanDome, which Schreier confirmed along with the assertion about when the game might be coming out. So, Rocksteady’s announcement today is likely meant to drum up excitement for the event coming on August 22nd, where fans hope to see the nextBatmangame, among a number of other high profile WB Games titles. Granted, if Schreier is to be believed about what Rocksteady has planned forSuicide Squad, fans likely won’t even get a full trailer, or much in the way of gameplay at DC FanDome, with only a teaser planned to follow today’s announcement.
Considering how long the developer has spent on development in the past, it will likely be some time before fans get their hands onRocksteady’sSuicide Squad. This means that Schreier’s assumptions on the release window being pretty far into the future likely aren’t far off, especially considering that the game was scrapped once by a developer already. However, with the success of Rocksteady’s previous titles with DC Comics IPs, as in the entire Arkham series, there is likely plenty to look forward to inSuicide Squad.
