It’s always wise to read descriptions of games in detail before purchasing from any outlet, but one version ofStreets of Rage 4makes a particularly good case for this practice. Copies of the game purchased from GOG.com are missing an important feature that is present in other versions.

The retro throwback,Streets of Rage 4, is a sequel longtime fans have been waiting for. The beat ‘em up offers lots of nostalgia, including plenty of returning characters, as well as a few fresh ones, likenewcomer Floyd Iraia, who sports cybernetic arms. The game also allows players to throw down in the streets with friends via 4-player couch co-op. Now that we’re no longer in the ’90s, another more modern feature has also been added. Players now have the ability to play online with friends, teaming up in co-op or battling against each other in PvP. It’s a great, if not also expected, feature that is sadly missing from the GOG.com version of the game.

According to theGOG store page, the description of the game comments this omission, stating: “Please note that at this time, the DRM-Free version supports local co-op only with up to 4 players. The 2-player online mode is not available.” The wording seems to indicate that the feature may be available in the future, but a recent tweet from the developer appears to shoot that possibility down. When a user asked if those with GOG versions could connect with Steam players, developer Lizardcube responded, saying “Hello, unfortunately the GOG version of the game won’t be supporting online features.”

As it stands, Steam allows forPvP Battle Modeand co-op play online, while the GOG version only supports local co-op. While a missing feature isn’t necessarily a major issue on its own, the fact the Steam and GOG versions of the game are priced the same ($24.99) is.

This is food for thought for anyone contemplating purchasing a copy for themselves. Anyone still on the fence about it should check out ourStreets of Rage 4review roundup, which will provide a very clear picture of how the game is being received by various outlets.
