Summary
Dressing up as a tardigrade monster and chasing off tourists on Titan is one of the most memorable experiences inStarfield, but it turns out the costume’s reactivity also extends to the First Contact quest as well. Though Akila City, Neon, andNew Atlantis inStarfieldrepresent the game’s primary hubs, a few smaller locations are also scattered across the Settled Systems for players to come across. New Homestead is one such location, and for being a remote “museum” nestled upon the surface of Saturn’s moon, it has a surprisingly decent amount of side quests to solve.
The questline that awards the monster costume is given by Dr. Giuliana Lakota as a reward if players help scare some tourists off by dressing up in a ridiculous tardigrade suit on three separate occasions. Thiseasy-to-missStarfieldside questhas not only become a fan-favorite, but it would seem that Bethesda’s developers have also made sure that NPCs had proper reactions to the player wearing the costume even outside Titan.
AStarfieldplayer named bombtree shared a video of their character on board the Constant, undertaking the First Contact questline, which highlighted the unique dialogue. What makes this situation so amusing is that the Constant is an old colony ship from Earth that has been adrift in space for well over a century. For the early pioneers on board, this is their first impression of the Settled Systems – their first contact with intelligent life outside their society – a grown man wearing a tardigrade mascot suit.
First Contact isn’t the only quest in the game where this reactivity shines through, as players can also have a unique start to theRyujin Industries storyline inStarfieldby wearing the costume to their job interview. Unfortunately, the overall reactivity inStarfieldis mostly relegated to the background and traits chosen during character creation, with New Game Plus providing an additional new dialogue option through the Starborn trait for players progressing through a previously completed quest.
SomeStarfieldplayers have reported to getting these unique monster costume lines simply by having the suit in their inventory. Whether it’s a bug or a feature remains to be determined, but it’s something to keep in mind for fans who are interested in picking up the tardigrade costume before starting these side quests. A downside to keep in mind is that the suit doesn’t have the best stats, though that certainly won’t stop modders from giving it a major buff onceofficial modding tools forStarfieldcome out in early 2024.
Starfieldis available on PC and Xbox Series X/S.
