Daniel Craig’s infamous cameo inStar Wars: Episode VII: The Force Awakensnow finally has a backstory. Many may not have even realized the English-American actor had appeared in the 2015 J.J. Abrams film. But he very much did, and the story behind it is honestly pretty funny.
InThe Force Awakens, most viewers might not even think to look twice at the stormtrooper who gets mind-tricked by Rey (Daisy Ridley) into removing her restraints after she was captured byKylo Ren (Adam Driver). But a quick rewatch will introduce a twinge of recognition as he utters his middling handful of lines from behind that expressionless helmet. That is, indeed, the same man behind James Bond, Benoit Blanc, and that guy with a somehow even goofier accent inLogan Lucky. But how did Craig end up in such an unexpected cameo?

Speaking recently with writer Josh Horowitz on hisHappy Sad Confusedpodcast, Craig discussed his surreal appearance in the highly-anticipated sequel. Horowitz began the conversation with a tongue-in-cheek declaration that one of his favorite characters that Craig played is, of course, the stormtrooper FN-1824. “Very dear to me,” Craig responded before laughing heartily while adding. “Is that was the character was called?” Maybe this random one-scene character shockingly wasn’t akey aspect ofThe Force Awakens.
“I tried to get into the next two but it didn’t happen,” Craig continued, telling the story behind the cameo. “I love [Star Wars], I wouldn’t have asked to be in them if I wasn’t being a fan. Ben Dixon, who’s an [assistant director] on those movies and he was an AD on our movie as well, and I was doing fittings. I just said ‘Could I get a part in this?’ And he just said let me go and ask. The next day, I was in a f***ing… [stormtrooper] suit.” Now there’s somethingtheForce Awakenstrailer could have used.
“I had to wear the suit all day and I couldn’t feel my hands by the end of the day,” Craig added. “These poor people have to wear them in the desert. Kudos to these people. I wouldn’t have done it if I had to go to Tunisia.” This is certainly one franchise that really likes to film in the desert, that’s for sure. It suddenly makes a lot of sense whySpaceballsparodied that aspect ofStar Warsall the way back in 1987.
It’s nice to know that Craig’s cameo was a direct result of him just being a bigStar Warsfan. It just goes to show the franchise has a lot of heart behind it, to the point where even massive Hollywood stars completely geek out over it. Maybe the world hasn’t seen the last of FN-1824.
