ThePlayStation 5is launching tomorrow, and it would be expected that Sony hold some kind of launch event for the new console’s release. The company delivered, using an ancient Japanese shrine as a venue, though that likely isn’t what one would expect from aPS5event.
The Kanda Shrine in Tokyo, Japan was recently covered in PlayStation’s blue color scheme, with massive PS5 banners and floor lights surrounding the location. While some players are content withwaiting for their PS5 to shipdirectly to their homes, those in Japan that were eager to celebrate the console’s launch recently got to do so at the Kanda Shrine.

As it turns out, Sony using the location makes sense for a few reasons beyond looking pretty. First and foremost, an outdoor event is far safer and less dangerous for those worried about getting COVID-19. Beyond that, however, the special location allowed people to have their devices blessed, as Shintoism allows even inanimate objects such as video game consoles to receive a priest’s blessing. In turn, this event’s venue killed two birds with one stone, and it seems like it was a great place to celebratethe launch of the PS5.
Sadly, however, not everyone in Japan was able to partake in having their consoles blessed, as Sony recently confirmed thatJapanese pre-orders for the PS5 are sold out. Those who failed to secure their PS5 consoles early have to wait for more units to be in stock, and with this special event at the Kanda Shrine already coming to an end, the unfortunate fans that could not pre-order in time have missed out. Still, for those in Japan who were lucky enough to grab a console and wanted to celebrate, the trips that were made to the holy location certainly seem to have been worthwhile.
This is not the only special launch-related action taken by Sony, however, as the company recently awarded thefirst adopter of the PlayStation 4and PS4 pro with a special package full of next-gen goodies. While getting every launch game, a plaque, and a free PS5 is certainly cool, attendees of this special launch event at Kanda temple may just have the PlayStation superfan beat given how incredible the re-designed temple looks.
For gamers outside of Japan that are just as desperate to play on the next-gen console, the PlayStation 5 is almost here. Withpositive PS5 reviews coming inand consoles being delivered all around the world, the latest Sony system is only one sleep away.
ThePlayStation 5will be available on November 12.
