Sons of the Forest, the new release from Endnight Games, has been doing remarkably well for an indie title, and the developer has said it has some pretty “big plans,” which include improvements to the AI companion Kelvin. Although afantastic survival horror experiencein its own right, one of the reasons the game became quickly popular was due to Kelvin. Players immediately fell in love with the helpful, yet brain-damaged NPC who provided a little company for those going it alone.

So hyped up was the game thatSons of the Forestsold over 2 million copies within 24 hours, which is an incredible feat for any release, let alone one from the indie horror scene. Of course, Endnight will want to keep its new title in good standing, especially as the game is currently in early access. With that in mind, the studio says it has a few ideas to keep the fans happy.

According to some recent Q&A sessions on Discord and Reddit, as spotted by PC Gamer, the developer behindSons of the Foresthas interesting plans going forward. As well as the addition of more tools and story elements, Endnight wants to make Kelvin even more helpful. For example, it’s looking like the AI will be given more tasks to complete, along with possibly helping the player to construct and fortify bases. On top of that, there are plans to give Virginia, the three-legged and three-armed mutant, better AI by making her more brave, for example. At the time of writing, these are said to be just ideas in progress, but it sounds like the studio is keen to implement them as soon as possible.

As beloved as Kelvin is, theSons of the Forestcompanion can also be a hindrance. There are instances when he’s been spotted chopping down bases in order to gather logs, his programming obviously not taking into account that players have been building in and around the very trees themselves. That said, his companionship has very much been welcomed by the community, and it will be interesting to see how Kelvin improves over time.

With its brutal survival mechanics, not to mention the vicious inhabitants of the titular forest, it’seasy forSons of the Forestfans to make some mistakes. Just like any game in the survival genre, it can take a little time and patience to be able to make it through those first few nights successfully. Luckily, players have Kelvin to see them through the worst of it.
