The firstElder Scrollsgame to feature map-based fast travel wasOblivion, which let players visit every regional capital as soon as they escaped from prison. The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrimmakes it harder to explore the map. At the start of the game, it reveals each hold capital, but it doesn’t fast travel until after players visit the location in person.

However,Skyrimmitigates this problem by reintroducing a feature that was present back inMorrowind: transportation. Players can find a carriage driver outside all the major hold capitals, and for a nominal fee they’ll take players to any of the other capitals in an instant. The only trouble is that some players may not know where to find these carriages or how to use them.

Where to Find Carriages

Carriage drivers don’t park outside every hold capital in the game. Instead, they only show up outside the five large capitals, the ones that have their own separate internal area. These cities areWhiterun, Windhelm, Markarth, Riften, andSolitude.

All five of these cities also have a stables area near the main entrance, and the carriages are always somewhere nearby. The drivers are different in each location, but they all charge the same amounts: 20 gold to visit another major capital, and 50 gold to visitthe four minor capitals of Dawnstar, Falkreath, Morthal, and Winterhold.

Skyrim Carriage Climbing

Players can also hire personal carriage driverswith the Hearthfire DLC. Each of the three homesteads can hire its own carriage, and the drivers will take players to a special list of destinations instead of the hold capitals.

How to Enter a Carriage

The way to use a carriage isn’t as straightforward as many players might expect. First, players must speak to the carriage driver and ask to visit a destination. After the driver agrees, players must exit the conversation and go around to the back of the carriage. An interaction point will have appeared, and by using it the Dragonborn will climb into the back of the carriage. The game will fade to black, and players will reappear next to the chosen capital.

Carriages only sit outside the major capitals, and so a trip to a minor capital is one-way. Fortunately, players can alwaysfast-travel back to a major capital’s stables, and unlike most NPCs, carriage drivers are ready to travel 24/7. Players must walk to at least one major capital (which doesn’t have to be Whiterun), but after that they can use carriages to unlock all the hold capitals' fast travel points for the low price of 280 total gold.
