Sea of Thievesis getting some substantial new updates over the next few months, including the addition of some furry companions for players to take with them on their journey this September across the open seas on all platforms.
Theintroduction of dogs toSea of Thieveswas hinted at in a sizzle reel for Xbox Games Pass during yesterday’s Gamescom Opening Night Live. Though the game currently does have cats, players of the game quickly noticed the new detail, and rumors quickly spread across social media. Eventually the officialSea of ThievesTwitter account confirmed the rumor with a tongue-in-cheek comment telling fans to please act surprised.

Outlining the plans forSea of Thievesthis September and beyond, developer Rare released a video narrated by Executive Producer Joe Neate that went into detail on the game’s future. The video celebrates the success of the game’s launch on Steam earlier this year, indicating that Steam users make up between 20 to 30% of the game’s overall active users all with the ability to cross-play with the Xbox One. Nate states the goal of streamlining content to make things easier for players, which looks to work in tandem withaccessibility featuresdiscussed earlier in the year.
Rare will continue to add more unique live events to the game over the next few months including the addition of a new permanent voyage for Gold Hoarders in the September update.Sea of Thieves, being a live service game, already receives monthly updates ranging from new quests to new skins for ships such as theHalothemed ship, theGears of Warship, and theBattletoadsthemed ship coinciding with thelaunch ofBattletoadson the Xbox One.
Sea of Thievescontinues to be a success for both Rare and Microsoft. RecentlySea of Thieveshit record numbers of playersin the game with over 15 million playing across all platforms. Despite a rocky start with lukewarm reception, Rare continued to support the game which led toSea of Thievesbecoming extremely popular on streaming platforms Twitch, YouTube, and even Mixer before the support was pulled for the platform.
Along with the content update, Rare announced theaddition of private servers forSea of Thieves, which is currently in alpha testing. The intention of private servers is strictly for PVP and emergent play. Players continue to enjoy the game in unique ways with fashion shows, a player-created SkullBall game type, and Pirate Games.
