Tomorrow sees the release ofDysmantle, a sandbox survival game that isn’t all doom and gloom for once. Set in an upbeat post-apocalyptic world where the player’s basic objectives involve dismantling whatever they see,Dysmantleadvertises itself as a more satisfying and colorful experience with freedom to explore and local co-op for survival gaming journeys with friends.
Developer 10tons is set to change the usual rhythm ofharsh survival games with the advent ofDysmantle. The usual staples of an apocalypse setting are present, such as zombies, crafting mechanics, foraging for flora and fauna etc. but the experience is intended to be more relaxing than the comparable tough openings seen in other games of this genre likeTerrariaorDon’t Starve.Dysmantlehas done away with limiting factors seen in these games, such as not including a hunger meter. The focus of exploration will be a more tranquil and “zen” adventure to hook interested gamers into a new style of surviving.

Unlike those examples,Dysmantleoffers little “fake longevity” for new players. From the glimpses of gameplay shown already,Dysmantleoffers a vast array of abilities, activities, and equipment to undertake in the quest for a chill survival experience, such as fishing in picturesque rivers, building and crafting equipment using the dismantled materials players have scavenged, and more. Quirky open world realism is at the heart of interactions throughoutDysmantle, giving it the chance to compete alongsideother open world games devoted to realism.
10Tons is no doubt proud of this venture seeing as how it’s been in the works for four years now, and promises to be in great shape upon release. The addition of local co-op play is also a welcome design choice, allowing for double the crafting opportunities with whomever players choose to play and unwind with.
Despite the promising concept and tone of the game, there are concerns about just how unique the gameplay and world building will actually be. Many pre-existing games in this genre already have large followings, withMinecraftbeing the most famous survival example.
However, the PC early access build ofDysmantlehas been play-tested for almost a year, and has received lots of praise and critical acclaim already from gamers. The scene is set forDysmantleto receive good reception upon release, and displays all the right ingredients for what could be an instant classic among the survival genre.
Dysmantleis out on January 19 for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox One.
