Summary

Although Unown is neither a legendary nor mythical Pokemon, this second-generation creature is still one of the rarest pocket monsters inPokemon GO. Niantic originally added it to the game back in early 2017 as part of a larger update that also introduced plenty of other Pokemon native to the Johto region. Since then, the developer graduallydebuted more Unown forms inPokemon GOuntil the popular mobile game featured an entire Alphabet’s worth of these creatures.

And while Unown remains so elusive that it’s still missing from many veteran players' collections, it would appear that not allPokemon GOfans are aware of how big of a deal catching one of these pocket monsters truly is. Reddit user BunnyGoHops can attest to that fact, having recently discovered that their girlfriend was sitting on a U-shaped Unown with perfect IVs since February 2022, yet was apparently completely oblivious to that fact.

Although accessories like the Poke Ball Plus allow players to catch creatures without actually seeing them, that wasn’t how this Unown evaded detection for 20 months. Namely, upon closer inspection, BunnyGoHops concluded that their girlfriend obtained her perfect Unown from a raid, then simply forgot about it. SeveralPokemon GOraids featured Unown Uover the years, starting with the original Galar event one that Niantic debuted in August 2021.

And though most players who managed to complete those raids should have an Unown U or two in their collection, the list of those that caught a perfect example of this species is ostensibly much smaller. For reference, the chance of rolling a creature with perfect IVs is 1 in 4,096, or 0.0244%.

Granted, the prospect ofowning a perfect Unown inPokemon GOis only enticing due to the associated bragging rights, as the creature itself is one of the least competitively viable pocket monsters in the history of the franchise. That’s largely because of its extremely limited move set that lacks surprises and variety, as well as unimpressive base stats. And while its IVs hence aren’t really all that important,Pokemon GOplayers will still want to complete their Unown Alphabets in order to earn a unique platinum medal awarded for that achievement.
