With almost 1,000 uniquePokemonon the market over the years, many fans have noticed similarities and trends between certain types of creatures. OnePokemonfan took these connections to the next level by designing an evolutionary chart imagining what common ancestors shared between certain dog Pokemon might look like.

The originalPokemonancestry chart was designed by artist and game designer Alex Fantastico. The Australian artist specializes in landscapes andPokemon-esque sprite design.

Fantastico’s most recent work is an extended evolutionary chart he imagined surrounding the various dog-like Pokemon from across its various generations. Smeargle, Herdier, Houndoom, andArcanine are some of the many Pokemonconnected to one another via dozens of custom-made ancestor dog Pokemon, all leading to an ancient ancestor. Called Luperior, this custom Pokemon shares subtle features with all the existing Pokemon.

This is far from the first ancestry chart designed by Fantastico. He has made similar charts for duck, crab, pig, and many other types of Pokemon. Fantastico is even working on his own customPokemon-like game calledZokai. Short for “Zoological Yokai,”Zokaiseems to be a monster capture game inspired by theclassic Game Boy AdvancePokemontitles. Tons of theZokaidesigns for his game, as well as his other customPokemonevolutionary chains, can be found on theZokaiOfficial Twitter and Instagram.

Fantastico’s fellowPokemonfans were stunned by his amazing work, with his Reddit post attracting over 800 comments in less than a day. Players couldn’t believe how much thought went into his work, and they quickly began checking out his other ancestry charts. The custom designs are so well-made that some fans who have been out of thePokemonloop for a while couldn’t actually tell which ones were official and which were made by Fantastico himself. Others called for Game Freak to hire Fantastico so he coulddesign real Pokemon for the next generation.

ThePokemonfranchise helped define an entire genre when it first appeared nearly 30 years ago, but it is far from finished with its innovations. Nintendo is currentlydevelopingPokemon Scarlet and Violet. In addition to adding the ninth generation of Pokemon to the game, these titles promise innovations on the tried and true formula, including an open world similar toPokemon Legends: Arceus. With the newPokemongeneration bringing the total close to or beyond 1,000 Pokemon, Fantastico will soon have plenty more entries for hisPokemonancestry charts.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violetrelease November 18 for Nintendo Switch.
