The Quarryintroduced a new and interesting mechanic for players that want characters to live without having to restart the whole game. This is called the “death rewind” mechanic, and it is unlocked after the game is beaten. Once the game is beaten, players can selectdifferent chapters ofThe Quarryto replay. If a character dies, an option to rewind to the decision that killed them will pop up to give players a chance to make a different choice.

However, this rewind feature has left some players frustrated, as some deaths come from decisions made in later chapters. To make matters worse, there is no fast-forward button forThe Quarry. However, there is one particular death that really has given players the most grief. Some have even called it a game-breaking bug.

Kaitlyn.

The Rewind To Avoid

The rewind players need to be careful of is in the final chapter. In that chapter, there is a part where playerstake the role of Kaitlyn. She is avoiding a werewolf in the lodge and has a choice to hide in the kitchen with Dylan. If so, she gets the option to then either hide in the freezer or use a decoy. If hiding in the freezer is chosen, Kaitlyn will get trapped and die.

If the game has been completed, though, then players will get the option to rewind. What is expected is to go to the choice between the decoy and freezer. However, instead, players get thrown back all the way to Chapter One as Abigail to her choice whether to take the stuffed rabbit from the cabin or not. This happens because the rabbit would later be used inChapter 10as the decoy. The reason this has been called a bug by fans, though, is that players will go back to Chapter One even if they did pick up the rabbit.

Rewind option pop up.

This means players will have to play through the entire game over again. The Chapter Select featurewill be gone as well. Due to this huge leap, players are better off just restarting Chapter 10 in the post-game Chapter Select rather than using the rewind feature. This way, players will only have to repeat half a chapter rather than nearly the whole game.

More About The Rewind Feature

The rewind feature can be used three times in a playthrough. While the Kaitlyn freezer rewind is an absolute mess, the other rewinds are more merciful and not known to have bugs. Despite this, the feature has gotten mixed opinions from the players. On Reddit, a poll asked if the rewind feature should be implemented in future games by Dark Pictures. 179 people voted yes and 194 said no while 210 were undecided.

On the “yes” end, players mention the joy of just having more control. It is good to just havethe option to rewind, and players who do not like it can avoid it. Many also like that the rewind feature does not become available until the game is beaten, so the first playthrough will make players have to deal with the consequences of their choices.

The players who dislikeThe Quarry’s rewind featuresaid that it cheapened the game’s core idea, that actions have consequences. Actively encouraging players to redo their choices rather than see what happens next can feel outside the game’s main point. After all, it is a horror game, and it does become far less scary and captivating when a player can just undo death with the click of a button.

Either way, the rewind feature turned out to be less than ideal when used by some players. The way the rewind feature can disable chapter selection, and its unfortunate bug with Kaitlyn has soured the experience for some. The best one can do with this feature is to just be very careful, as some rewinds go back a far distance.
