How to Dig Up the Grave in Pentiment
To dig up the grave, go to the Zimmermann House and convince Otto to help with the exhumation. Persuading Otto to do so is not challenging. In fact, the best strategy is to be blunt and say, “Help me dig up a grave at the abbey.”
Since Otto is a man of honor, he’ll respect Andreas’s love for his friend and accept to do him a favor. So, there’s no need to lie about Abbott’s permission or the real intention behind digging the grave.
If Andreas keeps saying “maybe later” to Otto,there’s definitely an issue with time management. As Otto states, it takes a couple of hours to exhume the grave. So, the ideal time to start digging up the grave is during work hours, not at night. The game will likely prevent the quest if it’s afternoon or night.
How to Convince Mathieu to Ignore the Exhumation
Persuading Mathieu depends on Andreas’s previous interactions with him. Using his affair against him makes him go away. But that doesn’t happen in all runs, as the Orator’s background is needed to bring up the incident.
Regardless, it’s not crucial to persuade Mathieu during the digging. After the conversation, he leaves Andreas and Otto alone, giving them enough time to exhume Gerhard’s grave and get away with it.
What Is in the Grave
Andreas and Otto find three objects in the grave: A bloody rod with zodiac signs, a mysterious plate, and a knife. Evidence suggests that these tools were used in Lorenz’smurder case, but the game never reveals Baron’s actual murderer, and there’s no way to know who buried the tools in the grave. So, it’s up to the player to decide what they mean.
