In a game where the skill tree is as large as it is inPath of Exile, players will eventually find themselves making mistakes or regretting some of the points they spent on seemingly-useless skill nodes. While one or two misallocated points won’t completely render a build useless, those who are aiming for perfection will still want to put those points elsewhere.
Thankfully,Path of Exiledoes allow players to respec their hard-earned skill points in the event they find themselves needing extra damage or survivability. Doing such a thing involves a simple process, though it may not exactly be what most players expect it to be.

How to Respec in Path of Exile
While you can respec your skill points at any time, you can only do so if you have to useRefund Points. You can get a total of 20 Refund Points after completingthe game’s lengthy main story. After that, you’ll need to getOrbs of Regret, which have a random chance of dropping from monsters.
If you find yourself needing Orbs of Regret, you can buy some from vendors using 2x Orbs of Scouring. You can even buy said Orbs of Scouring by trading Orbs of Chance, which are fairly easy to come by. If you’d rather farm your Orbs of Regret, you can get plenty of them by farming maps in the endgame.

Once you have enough Refund Points, open up your skill tree by pressing P, then click on theRefund Passivesbutton near the top of the screen. This will highlight all of your allocated skill points, and you may click on the ones you don’t want to refund them to your unallocated skill point bank. Keep in mind that you can only refund a skill that’s at the end of a progression line — you can’t get rid of a skill point that’s in the middle of a branch, which means you’ll need a lot of Refund Points if you want to reallocate a skill that’s deep insideyour build tree.
Unfortunately, this system also means you won’t be able to reset your entire skill tree unless you have the necessary number of Refund Points. With that being said, the best way to avoid getting your build locked is to plan and commit to a specific build. There are plenty ofoverpoweredPath of Exilebuildsout there, and we highly recommend new players to pick one of them first before they start experimenting on their own.
