Joy-Cons feature a variety of different ways to be used with the Switch by attaching them to the sides of the handheld console, turning the controllers on their sides, and more. The tiny controllers also sport Nintendo’s “HD Rumble” capabilities, offering unique motion capabilities in games like1-2-Switch. Now, Nintendo’s newest controller features a unique design with a smaller form factor.

A new patent from Nintendo shows the first designs for a potential circular controller from the developer, sporting a similar design and appearance to a Poke Ball. While the patent does not make reference toPokemon, the controller appears to feature several buttons alongside a rechargeable battery, charging via a USB-C port at the bottom. The center looks to feature a directional input with a similar appearance to that of the 3DS' circle pad. The controller is not believed to be connected toPokemon, withpast Poke Ball controllers being roundrather than flat.
While it is unclear how Nintendo will implement the tiny controller, if at all, the hardware developer has already released numerous alternative control options for Switch players.Nintendo’s line of Pro Controllersallows players to swap out the Joy-Cons for a more traditional gaming controller, often one of Nintendo’s most popular accessories. Nintendo has also released a GameCube controller adapter for the Switch, allowing players to connect the classic controllers for games likeSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate. Other less technical accessories have included the leg strap used withNintendo Switch Sportsand the Joy-Con wheel forMario Kart 8 Deluxe.
A unique new controller for the Switch would come as Nintendo is set to debut several high-profile new game releases throughout the rest of the year. Mario seems to be a focus for Nintendo throughout the end of 2023 with multiple new games, includingnew 2D platformerSuper Mario Bros. Wonderand theSuper Mario RPGremake.Pokemonis also set to receive a new game later this year withDetective Pikachu Returns. A new controller would look to be just another way Nintendo has continued to innovate with its game controls.
