Because Amazon Game Studios’New Worldis an MMO, it comes with several features and gameplay elements that are very closely inspired by other games within the same genre. For example,New Worldplayers can do all sorts of different activities that make them progress in the game both in terms of experience necessary to reach the level cap, which currently islevel 60 inNew World, and in terms of other significant advancements. This includes crafting all sorts of gear and items, like potions to help during difficult fights or rare gems to sell to the highest bidder at the trading posts, and this makesNew Worldquite exciting to get into and explore.

Another thingNew Worldtakes from classic MMOsis the fact that it features all sorts of different weapons, which also make for the game’s classless system. In fact,New Worldplayers can use two weapons out of a selection of eleven different ones, but they can switch to other weapons at any given time, effectively making the gameplay rather smooth and more friendly towards casual players or those who don’t want to level up many characters. However, there are two very common MMO features that are still missing fromNew World.

Why New World Should Implement Transmog and Appearance Changes

Transmog systems are quite widespread in many games now, even beyond MMOs, and they are ultimately good for the players because customization has become more and more important over the years. The ability to use specific combinations of gear to get the best attributes and perk selections is great on its own, but without a transmog system, it may also mean that players have to settle on looks they don’t really like just because being efficient in the game is more important. Vice versa, otherNew Worldplayersmight end up using less valuable equipment because the aesthetics of their characters are more important to them than min-maxing stats or damage to have a better performing build.

This can be problematic in the long run because MMOs are often designed to keep on evolving and changing, adding content that reshapes what players can do and achieve within the game. With that, a concurrent step is often to add even more gear options for players to chase in order to customize their builds or enable previously subpar combinations, and a transmog system would help in tackling that without the fear of missing out on powerful items. BecauseNew Worldis relatively new, it’s not impossible that Amazon will eventually add a transmog system that is based on a hybrid model, meaning that players can transmog items for free in a limited capacity or pay money to add more.

With this, however, comes into play the issue of players not being able to change the look of their characters after exiting the character creation screen at the very beginning of the game.New Worldexplains this when creating a new character, and players are fine with that because they like that look in that specific moment, but since this is a game that’s meant to keep players engaged for a long time, not being able to change a character’s facial features and hair is not ideal.

New World’s Aeternumprevents its inhabitants from dying permanently in the lore, so it would make sense that at some point they would like to change their appearance in some way—just like any player might. Again, this feature could come as well in the near future, but it’s hard to tell whether it will be free for all, maybe coming via an era-appropriate barber shop or something more magical in nature.
