One of Disney’s most iconic duos is coming back together again inChip n' Dale: Rescue Rangers, set to hit its streaming platformDisney Plusnext month. Today, fans were given an all-new trailer featuring a lot of familiar faces.
Chip n' Dale: Rescue Rangersbrings back the anthropomorphic chipmunks in a version of modern-day Los Angeles where cartoon characters and real-life humans are living as one. It seems as though this universe is a meta one, where the cartoon characters in movies are played by real cartoons. That’s at least the case when it comes to Chip and Dale.

Disney Plus' newChip n' Dale: Rescue Rangerstrailer is filled with cameos galore. Disney nerds, at least those who are fans of their animated works, will recognize so many characters and scenes showcased here. There are car characters fromCars, Lumiere fromBeauty and the Beast, Flounder fromThe Little Mermaid, and many more. The trailer shows so many Easter eggs and references, there is no doubt that the film is likely to be chock-full of them.
Disney has stated that the plot of the film will follow Chip and Dale years after their successful show has been canceled. While Chip has abandoned the entertainment business to pursue a stable life as an insurance salesman, Dale still soaks up the limelight he can by working the festival circuit. He’s also recently had “CGI surgery” to keep himself up to date with the times. Though they’ve been out of touch in recent years, they must come together as the Rescue Rangers once again to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a former castmate.
The tone that the trailer evokes is one that comes across as extremely self-aware, and many of the jokes heard so far seem aimed more at adults than kids. Pulling out classic characters also indicates this to an extent, because the film appears as though it’ll be really pulling on nostalgia strings. While this technique has worked well in the past for films likeThe Lego Movie, it’s also contributed to some failures such as last year’s newestSpace Jam.
Chip n' Dale: Rescue Rangersfeatures an all-star cast, with John Mulaneyand Andy Samberg in the starring roles. Also featured in the cast are Kiki Layne, Will Arnett, J.K. Simmons, and Eric Bana.
