Summary
Camouflaj, Oculus Studios, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, and DC have officially announcedBatman: Arkham Shadow, a brand-new entry in the belovedArkhamseries that will release exclusively for the Meta Quest 3 in late 2024.Batman: Arkham Shadowwill mark the second time that a virtual reality take on theArkhamseries has been released.
Back in 2016, Rocksteady itself releasedBatman: Arkham VR, which served as a launch title for the PS4’s original PlayStation VR headset and eventually made its way to other virtual reality platforms. Despite releasing a year afterBatman: Arkham Knighthit store shelves,Batman: Arkham VRis set before the events of that game, and features Batman attempting to solve a murder.Batman: Arkham VRearned somewhat mixed reviewsat the time of its release, but it still made great use of VR tech of the time and delivered a high-quality story.
Now theBatman: Arkhamseries is taking another crack at the VR space, withBatman: Arkham Shadowbeing developed by Oculus Studios and Camouflaj, the same studio that made theIron Man VRgame.Batman: Arkham Shadowwill get a proper reveal on Friday, June 7 at 2:00pm PT at Summer Game Fest, but in the meantime, a brief teaser trailer has been released that may hint at what fans can expect from the Meta Quest 3 exclusive game.
Batman: Arkham Shadow Trailer
The trailer itself doesn’t give all that much away, but it shows Batman exploring the dark streets of Gotham at night. Batman is swarmed by a group of rats and has to use a smoke bomb to get away. The rats have glowing red eyes and definitely don’t seem to be normal rats, so perhaps they are being controlled by thesupervillain known as The Ratcatcher, aka Otis Flannagan, someone that hasn’t really been properly featured in any previousBatman: Arkhamgames.
The Ratcatcher has been referenced in variousBatman: ArkhamEaster eggs over the years, but he’s always existed on the franchise’s periphery, and was actually killed-off between the events ofArkham CityandArkham Knight. Considering this, andthe events ofSuicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, it’s highly likely thatBatman: Arkham Shadowtakes place before the events ofArkham Knight, though its exact place in the timeline is anyone’s guess at this point in time. Again, more details will come whenBatman: Arkham Shadowis featured at Summer Game Fest on June 7.
