Originally known as Project Athia, the upcoming action-RPG gameForspokenis a highly anticipated, yet still mysterious title. Officiallyunveiled at Square Enix Presents early in 2021,Forspokenintroduces players to Frey Holland, a young woman who has seemingly been ripped from modern day New York City and transported to the fantasy realm of Athia. Developed by many former Final Fantasy XV employees who formed a new studio called Luminous Productions, the writing team is made up of some major industry names like Gary Whitta, Amy Hennig, Allison Rymer, and Todd Stashwick.
While there’s still a lot that fans don’t quite yet know about the game, Square Enix has slowly been revealing more over the past few months including a recent trailer during Sony’s State of Play. In fact, this most recent trailer has shown off more of the traversal mechanics, theelemental powers that Frey has been granted in Athia, as well as some towering boss-like creatures. Although that gameplay was less than two minutes long, a new gameplay clip gives fans an extended look at the game.

The latestForspokengameplay trailer, presented in 4K resolution, is nearly 7 minutes in length and opens with Frey battling what appears to be elk-like creatures. Combat inForspokenappears to be fast, taking advantage of the movement and traversal systems which include sprinting and dashing. The UI system is also shown off, giving fans a look at some of thespells Frey has access to during combat inForspokenlike Firetrap, Suppression, and Cluster Bolt. The player appears to be able to assign three elemental spells or abilities of the same type (fire, electricity, etc) to a triangular menu that can be switched between during cooldown.
TheForspokengameplay also reveals that players can spot difficult enemies based on how corrupted they appear. The more metallic they appear, the more challenging they’ll be to fight. Naturally, where there is risk, there’s also reward as challenging enemies offer more loot and XP. The clip also shows off corrupted humans and a mini-boss fight against an axe-wielding armored enemy called the Pitiless Arbiter. Similar to Frey, this mini-boss also has access to elemental abilities and can throw the axe at the player.
While the new details will undoubtedly excite fans, the unfortunate aspect is thatForspokenwon’t be making its original Spring 2022 launch date. Announced earlier this month, Square Enix revealed that the game is instead launching five months later than anticipated on October 11. The decision was made in order for Luminous Productions to ensure that the studio can realize its vision and continue polishing the experience.
Forspokenlaunches October 11 for PC and PS5.
