WhenMortal Kombatfans heard there was another film based on the popular game series coming in 2021, most were excited to see if this latest adaptation would reach theheights of 1995’sMortal Kombatmovie.Mortal Kombat(2021) tells the story of Cole Young, a character not found within the game franchise who accidentally becomes a part of the Mortal Kombat tournament where fan favorites like Sonya Blade, Liu Kang, and Kano fight to protect Earthrealm from an Outworld invasion.

Despite a positive reception from fans, the latestMortal Kombatmovie was not generally enjoyed by critics. This led to many questioning whether asequel to 2021’sMortal Kombatwas in peril. However, now it seems that another film is on the way. According to recent reports, Simon McQuoid, director of the first film, will be coming back to helmMortal Kombat’ssequel. So far, not much has been shared on the project, as it still appears to be in the early stages of creation, but some information has managed to slip through to fans.

It appears that some sort of multiverse style plot line could appear inMortal Kombat’ssequel, similar to thestory ofMortal Kombat 11. This means that fans could see the return of characters who met a gory end in the first film, as well as some alternate versions of fighters. Reptile, for example, had a human design when he first appeared in the game series, before a retcon decided he was actually a member of a humanoid race of reptilians, perhaps better fitting his name.

Fans were previously aware that aMortal Kombatsequel was being worked on with aMoon Knightwriter joining the team. However, with the news that McQuoid is returning to direct, fans can now feel more assured that the second film will truly be a continuation of the first. Already, manyMortal Kombatfans have some expectations for what they want to see in a sequel, including new characters, storylines from the games, and more.

It is unlikely one movie will be able to fulfill allMortal Kombatfans' expectations. However, there could be more than one piece ofMortal Kombatcontent heading to fans soon, as speculation onMortal Kombat 12grows. Back in January, some believed thatMortal Kombat 12had been leaked by a NetherRealm Studios employee, meaning that the iconic fighting game studio could be ditching its pattern of producing aMortal Kombattitle then following that up with anInjusticegame.
