Mortal Kombat 11is hitting somewhat of a lull in its post-launch development. The future of the game as it stands includes the release of the remaining Kombat Pack DLC characters, which includes Sindel’s launch on November 26 and both Joker and Spawn arriving in 2020. No future plans have yet been unveiled, but according toMortal Kombat 11creative director Ed Boon it’s much too early to write offMortal Kombat. 2020 is lining up to have a “big surprise” forMortal Kombatfans.
In an unsourced interview during the Brazil Game Show,Ed Boonoffers a mixed signal for those hoping for moreMortal Kombatin the near future. When asked about whether there’s any news or newMortal Kombatprojects in the future, Boon offers up an ambiguous, “Yes and no.” Oddly, his first instinct is to say thatMortal Kombat 11is “the end of the story.” But from there he says that NetherRealm certainly isn’t done withMortal Kombat.

The most important bit of Boon’s response is the end, however, where Boon confirms thatNetherRealmhas “a big surprise coming next year forMortal Kombat.” Boon doesn’t provide any direct hints or clues about this big surprise, but just the confirmation alone should be enough to getMortal Kombatfans excited. There’s moreMortal Kombatcoming in 2020, though whether it’s related toMortal Kombat 11or something entirely different remains unclear.
Speculation surrounding Boon’s tease is understandably scattered. Most of the focus remains on a potential Kombat Pack 2, another round of DLC characters forMortal Kombat 11. A past leak seemed to imply more characters were on the way, includingSheeva, Fujin, andEvil Dead’s Ash, but it remains a heavy rumor. Other ideas that have been floated include an UltimateMortal Kombat 11edition, or other DLC. But again, the focus remains onMortal Kombat 11when Boon seems to be referencing something else entirely. After all, moreMortal Kombat 11DLC wouldn’t exactly be surprising.
Needless to say, moreMortal Kombatis inevitable.Mortal Kombat 11has proven a striking success, plus the brand is once again expanding into movies with a plannedMortal Kombatfilm release in 2021. It’s not a matter of if, but rather when and what. NetherRealm has typically alternated game releases forMortal Kombatwith itsInjusticegames over the past several years, soMortal Kombatshould be going on a hiatus soon. But maybe Boon’s tease implies thatMortal Kombatmay remain a focus for longer than expected.
Mortal Kombat 11is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with a Stadia version also in development.
