Minecrafthas become one of the most widely-recognized games in the world since its initial release in 2011. The sandbox survival game has sold over 200 million copies over the last 11 years and has cemented itself as the best-selling video game of all time. Beyond the survival-based gameplay the game was originally built on, Mojang Studios' debut game has built a reputation as an outlet for creativity with fans crafting stunning creationslike a playable game of Yahtzee. Now, a newly released DLC will see the crafting game cross over with another iconic media franchise.

Minecrafthas been no stranger to tie-in DLC throughout its life with the game often collaborating with major franchises. This year has already seenMinecraftrelease a new DLC pack based onAngry Birds, as well as an update to theMinionsDLC to coincide with the release ofMinions: The Rise of Gru. Past DLC packs have seen the game incorporate several other popular franchises fromSonic the HedgehogtoStar Wars. Now,Minecraft’s newest crossover adventure brings players to Bikini Bottom with an officialSpongeBob SquarePantsDLC pack.

A trailer released Wednesday forMinecraft’sSpongeBobDLC officially revealed the new content witha variety of iconicSpongeBobcharactersfeatured. The DLC will see players whisked away to aMinecraftrecreation of Bikini Bottom and interacting with SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward, and plenty other characters. The trailer also shows off plenty of new mechanics within the DLC including a drivable Boatmobile and in-game quests the player can receive from characters like Sandy and Plankton.

The DLC will also include a custom character creator allowing players to put their ownMinecraftmodels into theSpongeBobaesthetic. The trailer frequently shows off the player character in an astronaut-like suit similar to the one worn by Sandy. Players will be required to havethe most recent version ofMinecraft’s Bedrock editionin order to pick up theSpongeBobcharacter creator. The DLC is being sold on the Minecraft marketplace for 1340 Minecoins, equaling out to roughly $8 USD.

Mojang has made plenty of major changes toMinecraftin recent years. 2021 saw the release of thehighly-anticipated Caves and Cliffs updatewhich completely reworked the game’s cave generation system and added several new biomes. 2020’s Nether Update also significantly overhauled the Nether plane of the game introducing a variety of new enemies and resources.
