Every day, players are provided a five-letter word to solve, with six attempts to figure out what it is based on the context and remaining letters. It’s no surprise then to see with the rampant success, the game is quite popular in the United States. WithWordle’s free to play nature, it allows for many players to get into it quickly, not restricted by a paywall or anything else like that. By the end of 2021, there were hundreds of thousands of players that have been hooked onto this concept.Wordlecreator Josh Wardlehas explained in the past he designed the game to be fun first, and that seems to have paid off. This map was put together by the education website schoolauthority.org based on a variety of data. The site tracks geotagged tweets across Twitter, hashtags, and direct keywords and player results fromWordleitself. Over 2 million tweets were tracked this way and calculated which States had the most activity withWordle. This is all compiled in the map provided by the website.
The map shows that out of all States, the one withthe mostWordleactivityis Minnesota. Right behind that is Wisconsin, followed by Utah, Iowa, and Washington all being roughly tied for third and fourth place. The other states that comprise the top 10 include New England and Illinois, with the game being the most popular in the upper Midwestern regions. The map also reveals the game is the least popular in Southern states.
Many people attributeWordle’s popularity from the ability for a player to share their results from this free-to-play game, which is reflected in this map. There was someconcern raised whenWordlewas acquired byThe New York Timesby fans on social media, mostly regarding NYT’s track record of putting its games behind a subscription service or paywall. Fans ofWordlewill have to wait and see if the popularity will be retained after the game fully migrates to The New York Times, and if their concerns are valid.
