The new trailer forNetflix’s disaster comedyDon’t Look Upis here, and despite the science-fiction premise, it feels painfully relevant. The new film is the latest from Academy Award-winning filmmaker Adam McKay and features a star-studded cast including Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Jonah Hill, and many, many more.
Netflix’s official synopsis reads, “Two astronomers go on a media tour to warn humankind of a planet-killing comet hurtling toward Earth. The response from a distracted world: Meh.” The newDon’t Look Uptrailerfeatures DiCaprio and Lawrence as the astronomers, desperate to warn the world about the deadly comet. Despite their best efforts, they quickly find that those in power, including the President (Streep) and her administration, don’t really care.

After a failed attempt to warn those in power, the two astronomers decide to leak the info to the public by appearing on a morning talk show. However, the hosts, played to hilarious effect byactress Cate Blanchettand comedian Tyler Perry, are even less concerned than the President. The rest of the trailer shows DiCaprio and Lawrence’s astronomers becoming more and more desperate to convince the White House and the general public to take action before all life on earth is wiped out.
Don’t Look Upis written and directed by McKay, the filmmakerbehind such comedies asAnchormanandTalladega Nights, as well as more recent award-winning films such asThe Big ShortandVice.McKay’s more recent films are known for blending real-world politics and issues with his comedic trademark, andDon’t Look Upappears to be the latest in that trend.
Sadly, a film about an impending disaster where nobody cares feels all too relevant. It’s not hard to see the climate change allegory inDon’t Look Upand the utter lack of urgency from those in power as a total indictment of our leaders' inability (and lack of desire) to deal with a global disaster. It’s certainly easy to imagine this scenario playing out the way it’s depicted in the trailer. Even the tagline at the beginning of the trailer states the new film is “Based on real events that haven’t happened yet.”
Either way,Don’t Look Upshould serve as a reminder of the current existential crises, while also delivering laughs and maybe even hitting a little too close to home. The new filmalso stars Timothee Chalamet, Ariana Grande, Rob Morgan, and Mark Rylance.
Don’t Look Uppremieres in theatres on December 10th and begins streaming exclusively on Netflix on December 24th, 2021.
