Despite April Fools rolling around once more, it doesn’t feel like a time for laughter. Many people, and even companies, have stepped up, however, includingRiot Games, which donated $1.5 million to Coronavirusrelief efforts even as pro tournaments for the company’sLeague of Legendscontinue to falter due to the virus' spread.
Even in the midst of bad times, however, April has been eagerly anticipated by manyLeague of Legendsplayers. April has always held a special place in the hearts of those who have witnessed the fantastic April Fools pranks, beginning with the fake champion Urf and extending into the incredibly fun URF (Ultra Rapid Fire) game mode that has made regular appearances each year.

Some of the goodies have already been revealed, asmanyLeague of Legendschampions will be getting April Fools skins. The biggest announcement so may have fooled players into thinking they are getting a brand new champion. Instead, they got the reveal of Pingu the Guide, a tiny penguin with a staggering amount of power. It doesn’t look like Pingu will actually be gracing theLeague of Legendsservers anytime soon, but Riot Games has devoted a great deal of effort to the ruse.
Pingu has, inLeague of Legendstradition, been given his own launch page. His passive, Bird is the Word, changes magical damage received into physical and vice versa, an absurd power that, if it were real, would balance right between overpowered and completely useless. His other powers are firmly on the overpowered side, as they involve teleporting across the entire map to each hero, marking them with his Titanic Mark, and unleashing an Ult that deals massive damage to everyone bearing said mark. It’s obvious that his release would completely change the landscape ofthe LCS and LES Leagues, if they weren’t suspended.
This sort of humor has been a staple ofLeague of Legendsfor a long time. It also leaves plenty of room to enjoy the new toys players will actually be getting, likethe rework of Fiddlesticks.
Pingu may not crack thebest solo champions in League of Legendsif he were properly balanced, but some players would no doubt play him. After all, no other move sets involve Celine Dion singing or putting on shades when scoring an Ace.
