Kingdom Heartsdirector Tetsuya Nomura, along withKingdom Hearts: Melody of Memoryco-director Masanobu Suzui andKingdom Heartsseries executive producer Ichiro Hazama sat down for an interview recently to discussKingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory’s development. A lot of what they had to say is somewhat disappointing, though other details were expected.
Speaking with Gamekult, the trio revealed thatKingdom Hearts: Melody of Memorywould not feature any new worlds. On top of this, players will not be able to customize any of the playable teams; the trios are preset and cannot be mixed and matched. When asked if the game’s story elements will be playable, Nomura responded with “not really.”

Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memorywill be a recap game that takes players across the entireKingdom Heartsseries using the franchise’s music library. Being a rhythm-game,Melody of Memoryalso deviates from theKingdom Heartsseries' regular action-RPG formula, so overall, it makes sense for it not to have any new worlds.
The inability to customize teams is where things get disappointing. It’s logical for players to be unable to do it duringMelody of Memory’s World Tour mode, as it would break the story’s logic. ButKH: MoMhas several other modes outside of World Tour that make perfect opportunities for the player to build their teams consisting of their favorite characters.
As for the game’s playable story elements, the way Nomura describes them is a bit strange. His stating that they’re “not really” playable instead of responding with an outright “no,” implies thatMelody of Memorywill let players play as Kairiin some capacity. Exactly what that will look like remains as mysterious as Nomura’s answer.
Nomura could just mean that players will fight a rhythm-style boss battle usingKH3Kairi, and that’s about the extent of what they’ll get out of her gameplay-wise.Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory’s trailersshow Kairi initiating a fight with someone she believes to be Apprentice Xehanort, which is a good opportunity for a boss battle to occur.
While it might not feature new worlds,Melody of Memorywill feature new songs, so whoever Kairi’s fighting might have a new boss battle theme players have to make their way through successfully. The game releases in less than two months, so there’s not much longer of a wait to find out what it has planned. There’s also aTokyo Game Showevent happening at the end of September that might reveal more information.
