Summary

A wedding is one of the biggest life events that many people will have, and the event is important not just to the people getting married, but to their friends and family in attendance, too. While there are casual weddings out there, traditionally, weddings are very formal events. Sometimes, they even have dress codes. But what happens when you invite your otaku friend and say “please wear a suit?”

Well, that friend may interpret what you said in a way you did not expect. That is exactly what happened at a recent wedding in Japan. Whentold to “wear a suit,“this friend of the groom showed up in a suit one may not expect - a Mobile Suit Gundam from the originalGundamanime. But there is more to the story than just that, including how this unique choice of attire was actually surprisingly appropriate for this particular wedding.

A Mobile Suit Gundam Cosplay at a Wedding?

To be clear, the Mobile Suit GundamcosplayfromGundamdid not show up to the wedding ceremony itself. It did not even show up at the typical reception, which still tends to be a formal event in Japan just for family and close colleagues. Instead, it made its appearance at thenijikai, or after party, which is the third stage of the wedding day when the couple’s friends usually attend.Nijikaiare harder to judge the formality level for, as they are more casual events, but they are still on the day of the wedding.

The man behind the Mobile Suit Gundam cosplay is X (formerlyTwitter) user Kuroboshi (@zgokzogok), who posted a photo of his outfit choice on his X account after the wedding party. In the post, Kuroboshi can be seen wearing the originalMobile Suit Gundamoutfit RX-78-2, a very high quality cosplay. In fact, the only part of his flesh you can see in the photo is his hand, appropriately raising a glass of wine, presumably for the happy couple. He also conveniently wore a name tag, so that everyone at the party knew who was hiding under the mask.

SoraNews24published a few of the best comments left by people on the post, including:

“Properly dressed up!”

“That’s one serious suit.”

“Both a suit and also not a suit…”

“Hey, you forgot your necktie!”

“You could say that the Gundam itself is naked.”

“I love how the people in the background are just acting like this is completely normal.”

A Surprisingly Appropriate Outfit Choice

We did say at the start of this article that actually, a cosplay fromMobile Suit Gundamwas appropriate for this particular wedding, and actually - it was not the only cosplay worn. If you take another look at Kuroboshi’s original X post and get past how incredible his cosplay is, you will notice that the man behind him is actually aYu-Gi-Oh!dueller. An X post from another party attendee also posted Kuroboshifighting against an EvangelionUnit-01 fromEvangelionas well.

So why were there so many cosplayers at this wedding party? It turns out that the happy couple being celebrated were RyuRyu (@00riu) and Ruby (@rubyred_16), who actually represented Japan in the World Cosplay Summit in 2019. The bride and groom woretheir own fantasy-esque outfitsto thenijikaiparty, and posted a picture cutting their wedding cake with a sword. What better way to celebrate the union of two award-winning cosplayers, than with a cosplay-themed party?

Deciding to wear a Mobile Suit Gundam instead of a traditional suit is probably notappropriate for every wedding occasion, but for this particular wedding, it was the perfect idea. The groom even posted on his own X account how happy he was to have a Gundam at his wedding party, and the photos have already gone viral. After all, a wedding is meant to be one of the most fun and happiest days of your life, so why make it all serious and formal when you can make unforgettable memories like these?
