Great Tusk is one of the exclusive Titan Pokemon players who get to fight inPokemon Scarlet. However, they couldn’t catch it when they first encountered it, as Titan Pokemon cannot be seen. This applies to all the other Titan Pokemon roaming around, as while players cannot catch their Titan-sized versions, they can capture and play with their normal-sized versions.

After defeating the game’s final boss, players are finally given the opportunity they’ve been waiting for and catch the Quaking Earth Titan, Great Tusk. This guide will helpPokemon Scarlet & Violetplayers find and catch a Great Tusk.

Updated on July 19, 2025 by Renri Seong: Great Tusk is the first Paradox Pokemon you’ll meet in yourPokemon Scarletplaythrough, but it won’t be until the postgame that you’ll be able to catch more than one. As you’d expect, Great Tusk is an ancient relative to modern day Donphan. The future version is Iron Treads, which can only be caught inPokemon Violet. Between the two Donphan relatives, you may be wondering which one is the better Paradox Pokemon. The following guide has been revamped to include how to get Great Tusk in bothScarlet & Violet, and a comparison between Great Tusk and Iron Treads.

Where to Find Great Tusk in Pokemon Scarlet

Area Zero

The only place you may get Great Tusk is inArea Zero, nearResearch Station 4. However, you won’t see the prehistoric beast in the wild until you’ve completed"The Way Home" main quest. Once you’ve seen the credits, you can fly back to Area Zero and use the now-active warp pad to reachResearch Station 4. You should see a variety of Paradox Pokemon, including Great Tusk, which you can now catch to fill out the Pokedex.

The Great Tusks in Area Zero will be aroundlevel 60, but since you’ve already completed the main story at this point, they should prove no challenge for you. Great Tusk is a Ground/Fighting-type Pokemon, so if you’re trying to weaken it before catching it, you should use moves thatdon’t target its type weakness.

How to Get Great Tusk in Pokemon Violet

Where to Find the Quaking Earth Titan

If you want Great TuskbeforeArea Zero, then you should go toAsado Desertand catch theQuaking Earth TitanGreat Tusk. You can only catch it if you’ve defeated it with Arven during “Path of Legends”. Unlike the Area Zero ones, the Great Tusk in Asado Desert islevel 45.

What makes the Asado Desert/Titan Great Tusk different from the Great Tusks in Area Zero is itssize. The Titan Great Tusk has a larger model, and it hasaunique mark (Titan Mark). In addition to this, Great Tusk, like all other Titan Pokemon, have 30 IVs in all their stats.

Titan Great Tusk is in the western half of the Asado Desert, near some cliffs and other wild Donphan and Phanpy. If you’re struggling to find it,refer to the trainer icon in the above imagefor the exact location. The Titan Great Tusk won’t attack you on sight, so you cansavebefore challenging it to battle.

The best Nature you’ll want for Great Tusk isAdamant (+Attk, -Sp. Attk)orJolly (+Spd, -Sp. Attk). This is due to Great Tusk’s poor Special Attack stat, and because its learnset consists ofphysical moves, such asHeadlong RushandClose Combat. If you want to give Great Tusk some type coverage, you can use TMsto teach it the following:

Ice Fang and Thunder Fang can be useful to cover Great Tusk’s Flying-type weakness.

Great Tusk vs. Iron Treads vs. Donphan

One thing you may wonder is if Great Tusk is better than its future counterpart (Iron Treads) and its modern day counterpart (Donphan). Like all Pokemon, Great Tusk can outperform its counterparts if it’s trained properly and has a fitting moveset. However, comparing its base stats and type effectiveness is something you should keep in mind before adding it to your party.

For one, Great Tusk is aGround/Fighting-typewhile Iron Treads isGround/Steel, and Donphan isGround. The additional typing (Fighting, in this case) gives it STAB from Fighting-type moves, which is something Iron Treads and Donphan do not have the advantage of. On the downside, the Fighting-type makes it weak to Fairy, Psychic, and Flying-type moves.

Compared to Iron Treads, Great Tusk hasfewer resistances and immunities; compared to Donphan, it has more type weaknesses. Stat-wise, Great Tusk has the highest Attack, HP, and Defense out of the Donphans, making it the better physical attacker and physical tank. It’s not as fast as Iron Treads, but itisfaster than Donphan. Unfortunately, out of the three, Donphan is the weakest in terms of base stats and stat-spread.

In short: If you want a physical attacker/physical wall, then go Great Tusk. If you prioritize Attack and Speed, stick with Iron Treads.
