Helldivers 2is one of the rare examples of a live-service game done right in nearly every way. Unlike some recent releases,Helldivers 2has clearly been built around its live-service model, with its core loop revolving around an ever-evolving galactic war that players are actively shaping the course of. On top of this natural integration of a live-service premise,Helldivers 2is also being consistently updated with new story and gameplay content, which continues to build on the strong foundations already set by the game’s engaging core mechanics. But there’s one other clear live-service area in whichHelldivers 2excels.
Battle passes can be a great way to keep players coming back for more while also earning a consistent stream of revenue, though this all depends on how worthwhile players deem the battle pass to be. Thankfully,Helldivers 2has been knocking its battle passes out of the park so far. That said, there are still a few waysHelldivers 2’s battle passescould take things to the next level.
How Helldivers 2’s Premium Warbonds Can Get Even Better
Helldivers 2’s Premium Warbonds Are Already Great Value
From the get-go,Helldivers 2dropped with a lengthy battle pass—known as Warbonds—that was completely free for all players. This Warbond contains a slew of weapons, armor sets, cosmetic items, and Super Credits to get them started. These Super Credits can be used to purchaseHelldivers 2’s Premium Warbonds, the first of which was titled Steeled Veterans. Functioning identically to the game’s free Warbond, this Premium version came with fewer tiers of unlockable items but still featured a handful of new weapons, new pieces of equipment, and plenty of new armor pieces.
Though this first Premium Warbond wasn’t outstanding, it did give players enough new and exciting toys to keep them busy for a while. Any shortcomings of this first Premium Warbond were also slightly offset by the ability toearn Super Credits in-game, meaning that after a few hours of grinding, players could unlock these premium rewards for free. This has remained true for every Premium Warbond released so far, and it’s a core reason why they’ve rarely been met with disappointment.
There’s Still Room For Helldivers 2’s Warbonds to Up the Ante
But whileHelldivers 2is yet to release a bad Premium Warbond, there’s still plenty of room for improvement in terms of what items are actually included, and plenty of ways Warbonds can be refined or tweaked to ensure that they don’t become stale. So far, each Premium Warbond inHelldivers 2has been themed around a unique type of warfare, such as Cutting Edge’s laser weapon focus, andDemocratic Detonation’s explosive weapon focus. This is a great premise that really helps to set each Warbond apart, and it’s a premise thatHelldivers 2should be leaning even more into.
It would also be great to see another free Warbond come toHelldivers 2at some point later this year, maybe on its six-month anniversary in August.
In the future,Helldivers 2’s Premium Warbondsshould start experimenting with even more distinct themes. These can range from a Warbond focusing on support weapons and equipment like stim launchers and healing grenades, to a Warbond focusing on melee combat, and anything in between. With these new themes,Helldivers 2can start to get a little more experimental with its Premium Warbond offerings, not just limiting them to weapons, armor, grenades, boosters, and cosmetics, but new types of rewards completely unique to that Warbond.
