Summary
As days go by the conversation surroundingHollow Knight: Silksongseems to get smaller and larger at the same time, simultaneously diminishing from a hot topic and skyrocketing to unprecedented levels of anticipation. The excitement around the originalHollow Knightdidn’t seem to excel to these same lengths and that makesSilksong’s hype relatively surprising, but it’s a testament nonetheless thatSilksonghas managed to remain in the public eye with as much tenacity as it has. There’s still no telling what could come ofHollow Knight: Silksongand when, which seemingly puts a potential third game far out in the stratosphere.
Game development charts rocky waters on a daily basis and indie studios are certainly susceptible to inclement development all the same.Team Cherry is only a three-person team, for instance, and had already expressed how much larger thanHollow Knightits sequel is shaping up to be, which means anything could happen in the coming years. However, if a sequel toHollow Knight: Silksongever manages to launch in the far future it would be excellent to see Team Cherry iterate onHollow Knight’s inherent Soulslike mechanics and pursue elements of a true FromSoftware action-RPG, including a custom character creator.

Hollow Knight Could Go Full Soulslike with a Custom Character
Hollow Knight’s Protagonist Evolution Suggests Something New in a Third Game
Hollow Knight’s Knight protagonistis a blank slate like many FromSoftware action-RPG avatars are, but they still have a default appearance that can’t be changed. They are an interesting entity in terms of the Shade that inhabits them with Soul while their hollow Shell is left to wander back and reclaim their Shade should they be separated from it.
This is similar to howa pilgrim fromDark Soulswould become Hollow upon deathand could reclaim their Humanity in various ways thereafter. Now,Hollow Knight: Silksong’ Hornet makes a significant change from that approach, giving the established character a voice and responsive dialogue. Players will no longer have a mute canvas avatar, but a full-fledged and well-rounded character whomHollow Knightintroduced as both a boss and a helpful NPC companion.
This should drastically differentiateSilksongfromHollow Knightand, while it’s a step in the direction toward becoming more character- and story-driven, it could eventually lead to a third game with another drastically different approach to its protagonist. If players got to customize their own avatar in the world ofHollow Knight, there’s no telling how much imaginative creativity could be expressed through each player’s characters.
Creating a Custom Bug Could Be Fascinating in Hollow Knight: Silksong’s Sequel
Even from anaesthetic ‘fashion souls’ approachalone, being able to craft individual bug characters would be profoundly entertaining considering how distinct and intriguing eachHollow Knightcharacter is. The more options available in such character customization would make it greater and more diverse, whether players want to make their avatar look more like Dung Defender or Zote.
Characters probably wouldn’t be capable of creating a fully insectoid character likeHollow Knight’s Nosk or Brooding Mawlekdue to needing a relatively humanoid anatomy for the purposes of gameplay, but there are still a ton of character creator tools Team Cherry could include to make them dynamic. Unfortunately, whileSilksongis enough of a grey area right now, the chances of a thirdHollow Knightgame and character customization in it are non-existent.
