Jon Favreau has an idea of how long he thinksThe Mandalorianwill run on Disney Plus if he has anything to say about it. As the show’s creator, he seems to be having as much fun making it as the fans are watching it (most of them, anyway). This has colored his expectations for the series going forward.
Favreau has always loved working on the series, to the point where he effectivelyturnedThe Book of Boba FettintoThe Mandalorianseason 2.5. Now in its 3rd season,The Mandalorianhas been slowly but surely growing its scope from a personal story about purpose and sacrifice to a galaxy-shaking tale that appears to set up the events of theStar Warssequel films. But one thing hasn’t changed: Favreau’s enthusiasm for the project. But how long does he think it should last?

In a recent interview on theEntertainment WeeklyStar WarspodcastDagobah Dispatch, Favreau shared some ideas about how many seasons The Mandalorian can last. “I don’t know what would make me not enjoy doing it, especially as long as the audience is connecting with these characters,” he said of his time with the series. “This feels like a really enjoyable moment. And I love this format of telling one chapter at a time and keeping the audience guessing, but also fulfilling certain expectations.” It looks like he’s in no rush to wrap things up, and actually might want to keepThe Mandaloriangoing as long as possible.
Favreau has said before thathe wantsThe Mandalorianto keep goingfor quite a bit longer, even admitting that he doesn’t have an end in mind yet. This seems to align with his comments on the podcast, which continued with similar reverence. “I really have been enjoying this tremendously and I love these characters and I love seeing how they’re growing together,” he gushed. “I’ve really enjoyed working with this group of people and I love collaborating with all these different filmmakers and different storytellers, both from the directors we work with, and other showrunners like Dave [Filoni] and, and others like [Skeleton Crew’s] Jon Watts and Chris Ford.”
Aside fromalready working onThe Mandalorianseason 4, Favreau also seems to enjoy the other possibilities for the future that keep getting brought up by the series and its contemporaries. “Now it feels like there’s a larger context for me to understand,” he explained, referring to the new characters and potential spinoffs that have spawned fromThe Mandalorianand other projects. “Because we just knew what happened after [The Mandalorian], and we knew what happened before, and there’s a lot to draw upon from additional stories that were told outside of what’s considered official canon now, but is held very dearly to the fans who’ve been at it for decades. And so we like to take all of that into consideration.”
The Mandalorian’s timeline is already pretty spread out, and now it looks like Favreau has no intention of letting the growth stop there. Even though the show has a definitive end point in canon, it’s still a bit nebulous. That imprecise nature offers several possibilities for where it can go and how long it can do it, and if Favreau has his way, it won’t end until he and the fans are good and ready to say goodbye.
