While many fans have been hoping for a new State of Play soon, it seems Sony has gone in another direction and dropped a major bombshell. It has announced that, on September 9 at 1 PM PT/4 PM ET, it will be hosting thePlayStation Showcase 2021. The event will last for 40 minutes, with it focusing on games releasing “this holiday and beyond.”
With such events, Sony has been good at managing expectations. The last State of Play, for example, outlined that fans shouldn’t expect the fan-dubbedGod of War: RagnarokorHorizon Forbidden West ahead of time. The only thing that Sony took off the table this time around though was PSVR2, letting imaginations run wild for what kind of games could be there. Now, a reliable leaker has revealed thatGod of War: Ragnarokwill make its appearance at the showcase.

Shpeshal Nick, who has reliably leaked many things such asPS Plus gamesin the past, posted a screenshot just after Sony made the announcement. The screenshot is a conversation between Nick and a “CENSORED” no image user. Nick asks ifGod of Waris going to be there, with the other user simply replying, “yes.”
What adds more credence to this is that Nick had basically leaked the Sony PlayStation Showcase too. The screenshot comes in a Quote Tweet of himself, where he says that he told everyone asking him about August that his source hadn’t heard anything. However, at the time of the tweet (August 31), he was told to expect something like a Sony event from September. In other words, as leaks live and die by their source, Nick seems to be hitting all the right notes here.
It does make a lot of sense, though. Since this is not a State of Play, it sounds like anE3-level Sony eventthat fans have been waiting for all summer. It makes sense to go big, as Sony even mentions developers big and small, and right now it hardly gets bigger thanGod of War: Ragnarok. It does need to be said that events like these can change with little to no notice, so it’s still possible it won’t be there. Or, Nick and his source could be wrong.
At this time, though, this seems to be one of very few reliableleaks regardingGod of War’s sequel. The next big question is what it’ll show, and assuming the game is releasing in the first half of next year, a cinematic trailer seems most likely. If fans are lucky, perhapsGod of War: Ragnarok’s release datewill be revealed. Nonetheless, fans will just have to tune and see if this leak is proven true and what will be shown if it is.
TheGod of Warsequel is scheduled to release in 2022 for PS4 and PS5.
