Fortniteis currently burning through its twenty-first season, with significant amounts of content added and removed season to season. To sayFortnite’s gone through radical changes in the nearly five years since it started would be an understatement, to say the least. EvenFortnite’s incredibly popular Battle Pass system has been reworked and experimented with along the way. In a moment of retrospection,Fortniteplayers have decided to argue what version of the Battle Pass was best.
The discussion was started by popularFortnitenews and leaks social media account HYPEX. HYPEX asked its followers to choose whichFortniteBattle Pass systemthey prefer and which felt more rewarding. The two choices presented wereFortniteChapter 1’s Battle Pass system and Chapter 2/3’s Battle Pass system.

When many live service game players think of a battle pass, they think of the originalFortniteBattle Pass. This is the two-tiered pass, one free and one premium, with a two-row horizontal grid showing 100 levels of rewards. Games includingPUBG,Apex Legends,MultiVersus, and many other live service games of copied this style of battle pass entirely. The newFortniteBattle Pass offers groups of unlocks, nonlinear options for rewards, and an extra 100 levels of bonus rewards. It’s also notable that Chapter 1’s Battle Pass rewards were unlocked via Stars earned through Challenges, while the modern version uses an XP-based progression system.
Surprisingly, the poll is very one-sided. Over 75% of voters and a majority of the comments on the post chooseFortnite’s Chapter 1 Battle Pass format, and do so with a lot of energy. There are a lot of noncommittal addendums, though, with many who chose Chapter 1 saying that the new Battle Pass XP system is significantly better. As for why they chose Chapter 1’s Battle Pass, many say it felt more rewarding, with rewards each level. The simplicity of the original battle pass was also well-remembered.
There are, funnily enough, those who say neither. They instead point toFortniteChapter 2 Season 4, which featured a unique Marvel-themed Battle Pass. It featured a simplified 100-tier battle pass, special Wolverine bonus rewards, and also 64 Punch Cards for even more rewards. A simplified track, lots of rewards, and a fun presentation are what made this specific season stand out.
There’s no indication that Epic Games plans to change the current Battle Pass structure inFortniteany time soon, though it could always change it for Season 4 of Chapter 3. Part of what makesFortniteso fun is how often changes come and how surprising those changes are. With that said,Epic Gamesmay want to note some criticisms people have of the current battle pass system.
