Despite a delay to its original 2022 release, Luminous Productions' upcoming action RPGForspokenhas still shown off quite a bit of gameplay footage to introduce players to the world of Athia and the magic-wielding protagonist Frey.Forspokenmay have faced a little controversy for some of its awkward-sounding dialogue and a few comments from developers regarding the streetwise protagonist, but many players agree that the game’s traversal options and combat look incredibly exciting.
Thanks to trailers and somegameplay footage that focuses onForspoken’s combat, gamers have had a pretty good look at Frey in action as she acclimatizes to her new fantastical surroundings and gets to grips with a brand-new set of magical skills. Much ofForspoken’s story still remains a secret, but the combat, spellcraft, and epic battles that players have seen have established themselves as the standout parts of the game already. However, the range, area of effect, and setup of many of Frey’s spells seem suited for very particular encounters, which could make regular fights interesting.

Combat In Forspoken
From the very first glimpses of Frey in action, it was clear thatForspokenwas going to focus on fluid and free traversalas the protagonist leaps about the open world. This fast-moving fluidity looks like it’s going to come in handy during combat encounters as well, as Frey can dodge, dive, and weave around larger enemies with ease. Her main way of both defending herself and causing damage will be her newly acquired magic, which has had some impressive outings in trailers and gameplay glimpses already.
Frey will be able to use a number of spells, mostly focusing on elemental damage that can be improved or unlocked as players level up.As Frey’s abilities broaden, players will be able to combine them in creative and complex ways to approach fights with a variety of different tactics. Not only do these spells look beautiful as well as deadly, but the array of magic on offer seems like it will give gamers so many options and almost infinite combinations.

Fighting Forspoken’s Different Enemies
While the spells shown off forForspokenso far certainly look impressive, a lot of them seem to fall into a similar category. Rather than being targeted, they appear to be aimed more towards having a large AoE or utilizing crowd control tactics. This will definitely be useful when Frey is faced with multiple enemies or even some of the larger boss battles that gamers have already seen, but might not be too effective in one-on-one encounters with humanenemies like the Tantas.
Luminous Productions may have wanted to simply focus on spells and magical demonstrations that were going to have the most impact visually, and so it has shown off the bigger and bolder attacks rather than some smaller, more targeted options.Forspoken’s combathas also focused on providing players with a large array of spells to cycle through and combine, so there will likely be many ways to approach combat rather than just relying on moves that have massive areas of impact. Depending on the situation, it’s clear players will need to have a number of different spells in rotation in order to hone their play style and approach each battle creatively.
Forspokenis scheduled to release on June 01, 2025, on PC and PS5.
