While the first couple ofFive Nights at Freddy’sentries skyrocketed the series and its creator Scott Cawthon to overnight stardom in the horror gaming world, thanks in part to YouTube content creator Markiplier andTwitch streamers playing through the scary games, the series kind of dropped off the radar for some. However, last year’sFive Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breachsaw a return to the indie franchise with a new installment that has more advanced visuals, open-world mechanics, and a new story. It is undoubtedlyFive Nights At Freddy’screepy animatronicsthat make the series so well known. In the original games, players were tasked with keeping a watchful eye on the possessed mascots through CCTV screens, while also trying to protect themselves from attack. While this mechanic was eventually switched up in later entries, the idea of not being caught by the animatronics has been the mainstay of each game, andSecurity Breachadds to that by opening up the world and giving the robotic antagonists more personality and animation.
The first installment was released back in 2014 and has since becomeone of the most successful indie horror gamesin recent history, sitting alongside the likes ofOutlast,Layers of Fear, andAmnesia: The Dark Descent. Although Cawthon was involved in some controversy last year, the series continued unabated, and the latest entry attempts to breathe new life into theFNAFuniverse.
What also makes the series interesting is thatFive Nights at Freddy’shas pretty deep lore, as well as a convoluted timeline, showing that its creator put quite a lot of work into the backstory rather than just creating a throwaway horror series. It remains to be seen whether a new game will be developed, but fans will no doubt be interested in seeing where the story can go from here.
Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breachis available now on PC, PS4, and PS5. The Collector’s Edition will be coming to PS4 and PS5 this fall.
